It is not too late. We go live tomorrow.

The Protect Your Business webinar starts tomorrow, October 6 at 1pm ET, and there is still time to grab your seat. Two days, plain English, no scare tactics, covering everything from setup and pricing to contracts, IP, contractors, and website policies.

This one surprises almost everyone.

You hired a designer for your logo. You paid the invoice. They sent you the files. So you own it, right?

Not necessarily. Under copyright law, whoever creates the work owns it, unless they assigned it to you in writing. Payment alone does not transfer ownership.

Think Microsoft, think Apple, both started by friends in a garage who had to sort out who owned what. If it is going to be your product, your logo, your brand, you have to make sure it is actually yours on paper.

Do you have written assignments for the work your contractors have created for you?

Your website looks great. But is it actually protecting you?

Forms, email sign-ups, and tracking tools all come with legal rules most business owners never learn, until a missing privacy policy or disclaimer becomes a real problem.

On Day 2 of my free two-part series, I walk through the privacy policy, terms of service, and disclaimers your site actually needs, in plain English.

October 7, 1pm ET. One registration covers both days. Link in comments.

October is National Women's Small Business Month, so here is one worth checking off your list.

Your website probably looks great. But looking good and being protected are two different things.

Every site that collects an email, runs a form, or uses a tracking pixel takes on legal responsibilities. Three things do most of the protecting: a real privacy policy, clear terms of service, and the right disclaimers.

The catch is they have to match what your site actually does. A copied-and-pasted policy from another business can create more risk than it removes.

Does your website have all three, and do they actually match how you operate?

The late payments. The client who keeps asking for one more thing because nothing said they couldn't. The contract that quietly leaves you owing more than you are being paid.

Almost all of it traces back to what your client agreement does, or does not, say.

On Day 1 of my free two-part series, I cover what belongs in a client agreement that actually protects you, in plain English.

Quick one that trips up so many business owners.

There is a difference between "I can find it on the internet" and "I am allowed to use it." The first is easy. The second is a legal question.

That image, that font, that paragraph, that song clip. Being able to download it does not mean you have the right to put it in your marketing.

And on the flip side: put a copyright notice on your own work. Your pages, your website, your materials. It is simple, and it is free.

Have you ever used something online and later wondered if you were actually allowed to?

You created it. So why does it feel like everyone else gets to use it for free? Most business owners have no idea what th...

You created it. So why does it feel like everyone else gets to use it for free?

Most business owners have no idea what they actually own, or how easily it walks out the door without the right protection in place.

On Day 1 of my free two-part series, I am breaking down confidentiality, copyright, and IP in plain English: what you own, how to protect it, and how to stop giving it away.

It is almost never the big blowup that hurts a small business.

It is the vague scope. The unpaid final invoice. The client who keeps asking for one more revision because nothing ever said they could not.

Most of that traces back to one thing: what your client agreement does, or does not, spell out.

A good agreement is not about being rigid. It is about everyone knowing what to expect, so you are not managing confusion in real time.

When did you last read your own client agreement all the way through?

Your content. Your templates. Your processes. The systems you built because nothing off the shelf fit. Your client list. Your brand.

All of it has real business value, and almost none of it shows up on a balance sheet.

The smartest, hardest-working business owners are often the ones paying the least attention to this, because they are too busy serving clients to stop and ask what they actually have.

Start with a list. Just a list, on paper. You cannot protect what you have not named.

What is one thing your business owns that you have never thought of as an asset?

If you've ever said "I don't need an NDA, I trust them," let's talk about that for a minute.
An NDA isn't a statement about the person. It's a framework for the information.
Every working relationship involves sharing things you wouldn't want shared elsewhere. Client lists. Pricing. Internal processes. Vendor relationships. Strategic plans. Financial details. The systems and tools you've spent years building.

Without a written agreement, the boundaries around all of that are subjective. What feels obviously confidential to you may not feel obviously confidential to them.

A real NDA, or a confidentiality clause inside a contractor or employment agreement, does three things:

It defines exactly what counts as confidential.
It specifies how that information can and cannot be used.
It outlines what happens if it's misused.

Trust still matters. So does protecting what you've built. They're not in conflict.
Your Legal Backstop™ has NDA and confidentiality templates ready to use → htbizlaw.com/yourlegalbackstop

P.S. This kind of gap is exactly what my new book walks through. Paid, Protected & Profitable™ pre-sale opens July 28, releases August 4. Waitlist is open at htbizlaw.com/paidprotectedprofitable
