In a transitional housing facility, providing comprehensive support services is key to empowering youth aging out of foster care and helping them achieve lasting independence. Beyond safe housing, these essential services, coupled with case management, ensure that these young adults have the tools and guidance needed to navigate their path to success:

Education Financial Assistance: Offering scholarships, grants, and tuition support to enable youth to pursue their academic dreams without financial barriers.

Room and Board Financial Assistance: Providing financial aid for housing and living expenses, ensuring they have a stable foundation as they transition to adulthood.

Supervised Independent Living: Structured environments where youth can learn vital life skills while being guided by mentors, fostering a sense of responsibility and independence.

Mentoring: Pairing youth with experienced mentors who can offer advice, emotional support, and a sense of connection during this crucial life stage.

Health Education and Risk Prevention: Offering education on healthy lifestyle choices and preventive care, equipping youth to take control of their physical and mental well-being.

Budget and Financial Management: Providing practical training on managing finances, budgeting, and saving for the future, building financial literacy for long-term success.

Employment Programs or Vocational Training: Connecting youth to job training, employment opportunities, and vocational programs that equip them with skills for the workforce.

Post-Secondary Educational Support: Supporting youth in their pursuit of higher education by providing continued financial aid and guidance.

Special Education: Providing specialized support for youth with unique learning needs to ensure they receive the attention and resources required for academic success.

The transition from foster care to adulthood, often referred to as "aging out," presents overwhelming challenges for many young individuals. Each year, approximately 20,000 youth age out of the system without a permanent family connection, leaving them vulnerable to a host of adversities. The lack of support and resources during this critical period can lead to devastating long-term effects.

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, nearly one in five youths who age out of foster care experience homelessness by age 19, with that number rising to 29% by age 21. By this age, only 57% of these individuals are employed, underscoring the significant barriers to stability they face.

Further research from 2020 reveals that 40% of youth who reach 18 in foster care were in the system for more than three years, and within just two to four years of aging out, they face the following alarming outcomes:

25% will not graduate from high school or obtain a GED.
50% will develop a substance use disorder.
70% of young adult women will become pregnant.
60% of young men will face criminal convictions.
Despite 70% wanting to attend college, only 3% will earn a degree.

The challenges these youth encounter as they age out are compounded by the absence of a stable, supportive network. Many lack access to crucial resources such as healthcare, education, and housing, making the transition to independent living especially difficult.

This is why I am committed to ensuring that transitional housing facilities operate at their highest potential for greater impact. These young people deserve more than survival—they deserve a chance to thrive.

For over 20 years, I’ve had the honor of serving youth aging out of care, single women, mothers, and domestic violence survivors, providing them with transitional housing, case management, and supportive services. These experiences have deeply fueled my passion for helping vulnerable populations find stability, hope, and the path to independence.

In addition to this hands-on work, I’ve also guided a wide range of shelters, transitional housing facilities, and nonprofits—helping them thrive through grant writing, board development, and securing vital government contracts. These opportunities have shown me the immense, life-changing power of well-managed facilities, and now I’m taking this expertise even further.
