Michigan Milk Producers Association

Michigan Milk Producers Association A farmer-owned cooperative servicing dairy farmers in the Great Lakes region. They met to establish a stable, reliable market and price for their milk.

MMPA was formed on May 23, 1916 when a small group of dairy farmers from the Howell area gathered at what was then the Michigan Agricultural College in East Lansing. The principles and organizational structure which these intuitive farmers established in 1916, laid the ground work for what is now an integral part of today's dairy industry.

A family dairy farm built from the ground up in the 1970s, sustainability is a daily practice shaped by decades of decisions, challenges and careful attention to detail. For Rosemary Sample, who co-owns and operates Rose Valley Dairy LLC, in Filion, Mich., alongside her brother Val, sustainability is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: building a business that lasts.

In the latest Milk Minute column, MMPA Board Chairman Doug Chapin shares, "MMPA has announced significant investments in Michigan, others have made announcements of their investments in dairy as well. Michigan is poised for real wins in dairy. MSU will play an important role in that growth by providing research, expertise and educational infrastructure. Everyone in the state wins with this growth: our producers, citizens and rural communities."

From bare buildings and old-fashioned grit, the Okkemas built De Grins Oer Dairy piece by piece after arriving from the Netherlands in 1999. In 2026, the farm’s journey from uncertain beginnings to focusing on the next generation came full circle when they were named the Michigan State University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dairy Farm of the Year.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Today and every day we’re reminded that caring for our environment isn’t a single action, but a continuous commitment. At MMPA, that commitment shows up in measurable ways and meaningful progress.

🌱 In 2024, we recycled 120.8 million gallons of water across our plants, conserving resources while supporting efficient operations.
🌱 Last year, we became the second dairy co-op in the nation to begin product carbon footprinting, to help measure and manage our environmental impact.
🌱 And we’re not stopping there. This year, we’re set to begin producing the world’s lowest carbon dairy ethanol, advancing innovation with sustainability at its core.

Because building a more sustainable future isn’t just a goal, it’s the work we do every day. Learn more: https://www.mimilk.com/about-the-cooperative/social-responsibility/
