I keep stating that we don't have a gun problem, we have a toxic masculinity problem. This documentary is an AMAZING example of how men can begin to unlearn toxic masculinity. These dudes are reading bell hooks and breaking s**t down to get free from their own internalized oppression. LOVE IT!

Change takes a LONG time. But it can happen. The Washington Redskins will finally be retiring their offensive name. Here's the statement released on the team's website this morning 06/13/20:

"On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team's name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.

Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.

Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."

The history of the Code Talkers and how the Navajo language and volunteers from the Navajo Nation saved the US during WWII is completely overlooked in our US history. Additionally, the role that the Northern Marianas Islands played in that win is almost never mentioned.

Community, connection, and survival. Lessons from indigenous folks. This clip is about 30 minutes long but well worth the lessons, particularly toward the end.

My nerdy self bought this video game through a kickstarter campaign several years back. I never spent much time playing it and just started again last night. The video game unlocks and shares these amazing cultural insight videos (you can watch them all on youtube in the link below). It's narrated in Iñupiaq (subtitled for us that don't understand the language), and the two characters in the story/game are a little Inuit girl and a fox. It's now available on various platforms and is a fun way to learn about the histories and current experience of Alaska Native folks. If you're at all inclined to play simple video games, or have folks in your life who are, this game is definitely worth playing to "earn" the insights. Teachers and parents, a great interactive education tool! Available on steam, and in phone app stores at a very small cost. P.S. I just downloaded on the apple app store, and it seems that you have to use headphones with it to hear the sound.

Challenging anti-blackness means inspecting the assumptions we have about what black folks can and can't do and be. It also means looking out for and digesting new images and media that help us see folks as individuals who have all kinds of interests and hobbies. Black folks can be nerds too!

Seek out those alternative images folks. Get out from under the socialization!

Examining our socialization is one thing we can do to unearth and begin to change our internalized oppression.

To work against internalized anti-blackness we need to consider what we've been taught in our lifetimes of media consumption. For a long time now, I've been talking about the show cops as a show that reinforces anti-blackness. I'm excited to hear that it's FINALLY been cancelled!

If, like me, you grew up watching (or still watched) Cops, it's a great time to examine the ways that stereotypes of black violence, poverty, lack of education, and dehumanization were reinforced. Just cause the show's gone doesn't mean that our learned biases are.
