"We have to create other spaces for our Black children to be safe, be loved, be seen, be heard, be in community, and be children."

Creating spaces where Black children are free to simply be children, not adultified, not overlooked, not hyper-monitored, is intentional work. It requires community, care, and a real commitment to their wellbeing.

This is a reminder of why that work matters, and why it has to continue.

We've all heard the saying: "the pen is mightier than the sword."

That's exactly why it matters for any culture to control and preserve an accurate depiction of its own narrative, especially communities whose stories are currently under attack.

Literacy is how we do that. Beyond oral history, reading and writing are how we pass down our stories, our truth, our culture, long after the people who lived it are gone.

That's why I started Read with Dr. Rachelle, because right now, the narrative being pushed is that reading and knowing how to read doesn't matter. I disagree, and this series is my answer.

It's time we bring back "third spaces" for our Black children. It is becoming more and more prevalent that students experience racialized harm in school.

While we, as parents and educators, do the work to ensure the safety of our students, we must also provide them with a third space to counter the hatred and fear that our Black children are going to encounter every day at school.

We are living in different times. Books are being replaced with phones, encyclopedias with internet searches, etc. As educators, we MUST be willing to evolve in our teaching style, especially if we want to engage younger learners.
