I finally finished and published an article I've been working on for a while — and given the current moment we're all living through, I think the timing ended up being exactly right.

It asks a simple question: what if a little discomfort could change the world? And then tries to answer it honestly, including the parts that may challenge all of us — across every political identity, generation, and background.

It's about a concept known as the "right to comfort" — the unconscious belief that we deserve to feel emotionally comfortable at all times, even in conversations about bias, discrimination, or injustice. And what that costs all of us when it goes unchecked.

You can write the most thoughtful and inspirational policy, but if the culture doesn't have understand it, support it, or believe in it - the behavior will eat it for breakfast.

When I say culture I mean the ideas, customs, characteristics, attitudes, and social behaviors that are normalized in your work environment. Just because you have a rule or a stated expectation doesn't mean anyone is following them day to day.

Policy can be part of changing behavior, but there must be a culture that supports that change. That work often includes addressing fears, clarifying misunderstandings, and ensuring leadership has tools to support and encourage the changes. Change takes time, patience, and a clear plan of action if hearts and minds are truly going to shift.
