Does a UAFR replace the need for drone detection?

No.

Under the FAA’s proposed Unmanned Aircraft Flight Restriction (UAFR) rule, eligible facilities in the 16 critical infrastructure sectors could apply for restrictions on drone operations over their property.

But a restriction is only as strong as your ability to see when it’s broken.

A UAFR sets the rules for drones over your facility. It doesn’t tell you when a drone enters your airspace. Drone detection does. It helps security teams identify and monitor drone activity, document violations, and give the FAA and law enforcement what they need to act.

Without detection, a UAFR violation can come and go without anyone knowing it happened.

Under the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) proposed Unmanned Aircraft Flight Restriction (UAFR) framework, Remote ID sensing is one of the proposed security monitoring requirements.

Applicants would need the capability, directly or through a contracted service, to receive and log Remote ID broadcasts from drones operating near their facilities.

Remote ID sensing can help facilities monitor drone activity, identify drone and pilot locations, and maintain airspace awareness.

If your critical infrastructure facility already benefits from state-level drone protections, the FAA’s proposed Unmanned Aircraft Flight Restriction (UAFR) framework could add another important tool at the federal level.

Under the proposal, eligible facilities could apply for a federally recognized drone flight restriction generally covering their property boundaries from the surface up to 400 feet above ground level.

Unlike relying solely on protections that may vary by location, a UAFR would establish an FAA-recognized restriction specifically for an eligible facility — giving security teams and law enforcement a defined regulatory boundary for drone operations.

But a UAFR would not physically stop a drone from entering. Facilities would still need the ability to detect and identify drone activity and respond appropriately when a restriction is violated.
