Under the FAA’s proposed UAFR framework, Remote ID sensing is a key part of the eligibility requirements for critical infrastructure facilities.

Applicants must show they already have protective security measures in place before the FAA will process a request — including the capability to receive and log Remote ID broadcasts from drones operating nearby.

The proposed application also looks backward, calling for up to 24 months of available drone-activity history.

Although the framework is still proposed, starting now gives critical infrastructure operators time to establish Remote ID sensing, understand and document drone activity around their facilities, and begin assembling information that may support a future application.

Not all airspace restrictions serve the same purpose - and understanding the difference matters for drone security.

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) provide temporary airspace restrictions for specific events, emergency operations, and other time-sensitive situations.

Unmanned Aircraft Flight Restrictions (UAFRs), currently proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), provide longer-term protection for eligible fixed-site critical infrastructure and other qualifying facilities.

While the two frameworks differ in purpose and duration, they share an important operational challenge: a restriction does not provide visibility into what is happening in the airspace.

Detection technology provides the real-time operational awareness needed to identify drone activity and recognize when protected airspace is being violated.
