Expanding Your Capacity
Have you ever wondered just how much you can handle? Are you at the end of your rope?
When we are running on empty, we suffer, our team suffers – actually, everyone around us suffers.
As many of you have heard me say many times – you can’t give what you don’t have.
So, what can we do about it?
When we are in the middle of exhaustion, burnout, frustration, or whatever you want to call it; it is almost impossible to even dream of DOING something about it.
DOING ONE MORE THING just doesn’t seem to be the answer, but that is exactly what we must do. We must do something different.
Have you noticed a time when you read a book, went for a walk, listened to your favorite music, talked with a mentor, or journaled about your situation that you felt a little more energized? At least for a little while.
In John Maxwell’s book No Limits, he teaches how to blow the cap off your capacity.
He teaches to increase your capacity, you have to grow in awareness, develop your abilities, and make the right choices.
As I reflected on these three things below is some of what I came up with for myself –
Growing awareness helps me to know when I am stuck in analysis paralysis, when I need to ask for help, take time off, or completely disconnect.
I also meet with my coach to look for blind spots and explore what fills me and drains me.
I develop my abilities by reading leadership books, listening to podcasts, meeting with my mentor, taking a leadership course, or attending a leadership conference. This increases my capacity and as a bonus, I often get validation for the things I am doing right.
Who doesn’t need more validation that they are doing something right to keep them going?
And then there is making the right choices. Boy, this one is the hardest one for me because it boils down to setting priorities and making good decisions based on those priorities.
It is hard to admit but being exhausted and burned out is often a result of poor decisions and not setting priorities. Since I am still working on this one, I will take it full circle back to increasing awareness.
The more aware I become of how my priorities and decisions impact what I can do and handle in a day, the better I am becoming at increasing my capacity and having fewer and fewer days of feeling burned out and exhausted. Boy does it feel good!
I want this for YOU too!! Here's how you get it.
Take one of these areas -
🪴Grow in awareness.
👨💻Develop your abilities.
👉🏻Make the right choices.
And give a teeny tiny attention to where you can use this to get back a little of your s***k.
Action: Invest 5-10 minutes to reflect on the information above to jump-start your reflection and pick one small thing to implement today to move you toward a level of expanded capacity.
