🍁 October Lawn Tip: Don't Put the Mower Away Just Yet! 🌱

Cooler weather is finally here in Oklahoma, but your lawn may still need a trim!

As long as your grass is growing, you may need to continue mowing in October. The key is to keep your grass at the proper height without cutting it too short.

🌿 For Bermuda grass: Continue mowing as needed while it's actively growing. As temperatures drop and growth slows, you'll mow less frequently.

🌱 For Fescue grass: Keep mowing as needed, generally around 3–4 inches tall. Fall is an important growing season for fescue, so avoid cutting it too short.

🍂 And don't forget to remove heavy piles of leaves so they don't block sunlight and air from reaching your grass.

A little attention this fall helps your lawn head into winter in better shape!

🌱 Green in a dormant lawn? Those aren’t a good sign.

Winter w**ds thrive while your lawn is resting. Most start sprouting in fall (September through November), but you’ll notice them most from December through April. Here’s what to watch for in Oklahoma:

🌱Henbit: Square stems, purple flowers, and scalloped leaves. Germinates in fall and stays small through winter. Most visible February to April, when the purple blooms show up.
🌱Common chickw**d: Low, mat-forming, with small star-like white flowers. Visible from late fall through early spring (about November to April), especially in cool, damp spots.
🌱Annual bluegrass: Light green clumps with white seed heads. Germinates in fall, with seed heads showing from late winter into April. Mild winters can bring it out earlier.
🌱Wild onion/garlic: Thin, hollow, onion-smelling blades. Emerges in late fall and is most noticeable January to April.
🌱Clover and dandelions: Active in fall and again in spring (March to May).

A fall pre-emergent application creates a barrier in the soil that stops those seeds from sprouting, so you’re not fighting a lawn full of w**ds come late winter.
