Shipping Overview

Additional COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) in Shenzhen. Consequently, all operations in the western area of YICT, one of the busiest ports in China, remain suspended until further notice. YICT updated control measures of export laden container as follows:

May 25th (22:00 pm) to May 30th (23:59pm), export laden container gate-in will suspend. Import laden container gate-out and empty container pick-up operation will remain as normal.
From May 31st (00:00 am), export laden container gate-in will resume. From May 31st to June 6th, open will be available only to vessels within ETA 3 days.
Container vessel, X-Press Pearl, reported a fire onbaord on May 20. The situation deteriorated with reports of an explosion on the vessel on May 25 outside of Colombo. The vessel is carrying 25 tons of nitric acid and other chemicals. This event will cause delays for any transshipments via Colombo.

Carriers are pushing general rate increases as imports from Asia are expected to increase in June. Carriers will likely implement some of the proposed general rate increases (GRIs) on June 1. Most of the carriers have filed GRIs of $1,000 per FEU effective June 1. Retailers and NVOs have been booking space for June, so space availability next month is expected to be worse than May.

Freight rates in the eastbound trans-Pacific continue to increase. Spot rates from Asia to the U.S. West Coast have significantly increased over the last month. The congestion in Asian ports and U.S. ports is constraining equipment capacity which means shippers are competing with each other to secure space and equipment. This fight for capacity is forcing prices higher.

When port and rail bottlenecks are resolved, hopefully by July, the increase in freight rates will level off and rates could begin to come down in the fourth quarter.
