📚 Bridging the Generational Gap: Why the Library is a Hidden Gem for Our Elders 📚

In an era dominated by scrolling, social media, and instant digital connection, it can be easy to overlook a classic staple of our communities. It truly is a "sign of the times" that many people forget the public library is still thriving—and it offers so much more than just a building full of books!

As Adult Family Home providers, we are always searching for cost-effective ways to bring joy and mental stimulation to our residents. If you haven't checked out your local branch lately, you’re missing a goldmine of free, memory-focused opportunities specifically designed to support the elderly.

Here are some incredible free perks you can tap into right now with a library card:

🧠 Memory Kits & Cognitive Support: Many branches offer specialized kits packed with high-contrast puzzles, tactile games, and nostalgia-inducing items built to spark beautiful memories and reminiscence therapy.

📦 Accessible Delivery Services: If mobility is a challenge, many libraries offer free delivery of large-print books, audiobooks, and vintage movies straight to your AFH front door.

The library is a timeless treasure that bridges the gap between the past and the present. It’s the perfect, cost-free addition to your activities toolbox.

When was the last time you visited your library?

Let’s talk AI!

How is everyone navigating artificial intelligence in their Adult Family Home? Are you embracing it, experimenting with it, or still wondering what all the hype is about?

At Accessible Consulting, we’re seeing both sides of the conversation. AI can be an amazing tool helping with ideas, organization, communication, training, documentation, and so much more.

BUT…there’s another side.

We’re also feeling frustration as business owners with bots contacting us constantly. And sometimes it makes you wonder: Where did the personal connection go?

AI can make things faster and more efficient, but caregiving is built on relationships, trust, compassion, and one-on-one interaction. Those things can't be replaced by a bot.

So, we want to hear from our AFH community:

1. Are you using AI in your home?
2. What are you using it for?
3. Has AI made your work easier—or taken away some of the personal touch?
4. Where do you think AI belongs in an Adult Family Home, and where should we draw the line?

What’s your take on AI in your home? Drop your thoughts below!

Attention AFH Providers:
If you had the chance to sit down for a 1-on-1 interview with DSHS leadership, what is the #1 issue you would bring to the table?

Running a home means balancing complex rules, licensing delays, and endless paperwork. It’s a lot to manage every single day.

Personally If I could interview a DSHS representative to get direct answers for our provider community, I know exactly what pain points I’d push for but your voice matters most.

Let’s talk: What is the biggest roadblock or burning question you want addressed?

Leave a comment below and let’s see what commonality issue everyone is experiencing.

Is Your Facility Ready to Navigate the Confusion Around Cannabis Use?

The landscape of cannabis regulations is a challenging one, with state laws clashing against federal standards.

Did you know that Washington State Residential Care Services (RCS) is reissuing its cannabis guidance for Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID) after the original 2015 document reached its retention period?

The use of medical and recreational cannabis is still illegal under federal regulation. Consequently, federal funds such as Medicaid, cannot be used directly or indirectly for activities or expenses related to the use of cannabis.

As more residents access cannabis to treat symptoms of disease, understanding these conflicting laws can be confusing both for providers and for those they serve. While medical and recreational cannabis remains illegal under federal regulations, RCS has made it clear:

They won't cite facilities that ensure safe use of cannabis by residents, as long as clear policies are in place.

Question: Do you feel confident with your cannabis policy?

How does your facility plan to address the needs of residents who wish to use cannabis safely and responsibly?

Now is the time to develop clear policies that protect all parties involved. From assisting residents in smoked form to ensuring supervision, here’s your chance to be proactive.

Dive in and engage in the conversation let’s stay connected.
