In my work, I've thought a lot about what it means to sit with people in pain.

As a mediator, much like a present friend, it's not exclusively about saying, "I'm so sorry that you've been wounded, or that you're experiencing this." Instead, it's about holding space for fear, uncertainty, and hope.

As Brene' Brown describes, it's the real difference between sympathy and empathy...not solving the problem for the other...rather, honoring the varying truths of what happened, how those truths make the parties feel, while cultivating hope and opportunity for future growth.

Difficult conversations are hard. Having an empathetic guide makes a difference.
