A Step Forward for Public Safety

On Tuesday, the Oneonta Common Council approved a one-month pilot program that adds two firefighters during the City’s historically busiest call-volume hours, increasing on-duty staffing to nine during the pilot.

This program is an important opportunity to evaluate a staffing model that strengthens public safety by delivering a more reliable on-duty response and reducing reliance on off-duty callbacks and mutual aid. It also has the potential to create a more predictable and sustainable approach to overtime.

Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 thanks the Oneonta Common Council, the city administration, Mayor Buttermann and Fire Chief Brian Knapp for recognizing this need and taking this important first step. We look forward to the pilot's results.

🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE 🚨

Rallying for Teresann & Her Family
If you’ve ever stopped into our bar, there’s a very good chance you’ve met our head bartender, Teresann. For years, TA has been the true backbone behind the bar for us—always the first one to step up and help out, and always with a smile on her face.
Unfortunately, on Sunday, Teresann and her family faced the unimaginable when they lost everything to a devastating house fire. We are incredibly thankful that everyone made it out safely, but they are now left with the monumental task of starting over from scratch.
We all know TA would be the absolute first person to dive in and help someone else in this situation. Now, it’s our turn to show her what the Sixth Ward Athletic Club and our amazing local community are all about. It's time to rally behind her.
We will be hosting two upcoming community events to support the family:
👕 1. Clothing & Essentials Drive
When: This Friday, July 17th from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: The Sixth Ward Athletic Club
What we need: All donations are accepted. We are especially looking for items for her granddaughters as well as monetary/gift cards or toy donations.
Specific sizes needed:
Granddaughter 1: Size 4–5 pants and shirts, size 4-5 shoes
Granddaughter 2: Size 5–6 pants, size 5T shirts, size 5–6 shoes
Granddaughter 3: Size 12–14 pants and shirts, size 1 shoes
Note: Any unused items from the drive will be safely arranged for donation to others in need.
🍝 2. Benefit Pasta Dinner & Raffle
When: Next Friday, July 24th from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Details: 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Teresann and her family. We will also be hosting basket raffles, and a 50/50 drawing!
Tickets: $12. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but pre-sale tickets are highly encouraged so we can get an accurate headcount for food.
How You Can Help Right Now:
Donate: Bring clothes, toys, or financial support to Friday's drive.
Volunteer: We are actively looking for volunteers to help with the events and coordination.
Contribute: We are accepting basket donations and items for the Chinese auction.

This morning, the Oneonta Professional Firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the City of Oneonta.

The on-duty crew arrived to find heavy fire showing. The building's balloon-frame construction allowed the fire to race through concealed wall spaces, rapidly spreading from floor to floor. The fire quickly transitioned to a defensive operation to protect surrounding buildings.

Bringing this fire under control required multiple master streams from engines and two ladder trucks, along with seven off-duty Oneonta firefighters and numerous mutual aid departments.

This is the reality of today's fire service. A fire can spread from a single room to a fully involved building in minutes. As conditions worsen, the need for firefighters increases. More personnel are required to operate hose lines, staff ladder trucks, establish water supplies, relieve exhausted crews, and protect neighboring buildings. Without enough firefighters, critical tasks take longer, and the fire continues to grow.

We are grateful to our mutual aid partners and the additional firefighters who responded to help protect our community.

This morning, the Oneonta Professional Firefighters Local 2408 responded to a reported structure fire at a local business.

The on duty firefighters responded immediately and arrived within minutes to find fire rapidly extending up the exterior wall of the building. Crews quickly stretched a handline, knocked down the fire, checked for extension, and searched the building to ensure the fire had not spread into the structure.

Due to the potential for fire extension, off-duty firefighters were called back to duty. The callback personnel responded with an additional engine to the scene while other firefighters staffed the station to ensure the city remained protected during the incident.

Thanks to the rapid response and immediate action of our firefighters, the fire was stopped before it could spread throughout the building, likely saving another local business from what could have become a much larger and more destructive fire.

Today’s incident is a reminder of why staffing matters. While this fire was contained with the resources available, not every fire is this small. Fires in apartment buildings, commercial occupancies, schools, nursing homes, and other high-risk buildings require significantly more firefighters to safely perform fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation, water supply, rapid intervention, and command functions simultaneously.

Callback firefighters provide critical additional manpower, but they still need time to respond from home. The firefighters already on duty are the ones who make the initial attack and determine whether a fire is contained or grows into a major incident. Adequate daily staffing remains essential to protecting our community.

Multiple Life-Threatening Emergencies Happening Simultaneously

Happening now: While one ambulance was already responding to a medical emergency, three additional ambulance calls were dispatched simultaneously, including chest pain, falls, and a cardiac arrest.

With all available EMS resources already committed, off-duty crews were recalled to the station, and mutual aid agencies were requested to provide assistance.

Four simultaneous emergencies, with limited resources, leave no reserve capacity. When the call volume exceeds staffing levels, the system immediately relies on off-duty personnel and outside agencies.

At the same time, the city remains vulnerable to the next emergency. A working fire, a rescue, another cardiac arrest, or any major incident would have to wait for already committed crews to clear, for off-duty personnel to arrive from home, or for mutual aid resources traveling from neighboring communities.

This is the reality of operating at minimum staffing. Emergencies do not occur one at a time, and when resources are exhausted, there is little left to answer the next call for help.

This is also the third time today that crews have been called back in due to the number of simultaneous emergencies...

EXTREME HEAT ADVISORY

Today, members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters have responded to multiple heat-related emergencies throughout our community, including heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other medical emergencies associated with prolonged heat exposure.

Heat illness can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. We encourage everyone to take precautions and check on family members, neighbors, and those most vulnerable to the heat.

Heat Safety Tips:
• Drink water frequently, even if you do not feel thirsty.
• Stay in air conditioning whenever possible.
• Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade.
• Check on children, older adults, and those without access to cooling.
• Never leave children, adults, or pets in a parked vehicle.
• Know the warning signs of heat illness:

* Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue.
* Heat stroke: confusion, altered mental status, hot skin, loss of consciousness, or seizures. Call 911 immediately.

Our members remain committed to serving this community 24 hours a day, but prevention is always the best medicine.

Stay hydrated. Stay cool. Look out for one another.

HAPPENING NOW

The Oneonta Fire Department is currently managing multiple simultaneous EMS emergencies across the city, including traumatic injuries, stroke patients, and overdose incidents.

At this time, all on-duty firefighters, EMTs and paramedics are committed to active emergency calls. Due to the volume and severity of incidents, off-duty firefighters and paramedics have been requested to respond to the station to provide additional coverage for the community.

This is a reminder that emergencies do not occur one at a time. While one crew is treating a critically ill patient, another emergency can happen anywhere in the city.

The ability to recall off-duty personnel provides an important safety net that helps ensure emergency services remain available when demand exceeds the resources immediately on duty.

We appreciate the dedication of our firefighters, paramedics and EMTs who continue to answer the call, whether they are on duty or responding from home to help their community.

CAREER FAIR FOR ONEONTA STUDENTS

Yesterday, members of the Oneonta Professional Firefighters participated in a local career fair at the Oneonta Boys & Girls Club.

Students had the opportunity to learn what it takes to become a Firefighter/Paramedic with the Oneonta Fire Department.

The path includes:

• Taking and passing a Civil Service examination
• Taking and passing a physical agility test
• Completing a 14-week fire academy
• Obtaining EMT and Paramedic certifications, which collectively require over a year and more than 2,000 hours of training
• Continuous training throughout a firefighter’s career

Students also learned about the many responsibilities firefighters perform every day, including:

• Fighting structure, vehicle, and brush fires
• Providing advanced life support and emergency medical care
• Rescuing trapped occupants from buildings and vehicles
• Performing rope, confined space, swift water, and technical rescues
• Responding to hazardous materials incidents
• Investigating fire causes and origins
• Operating and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment
• Conducting fire prevention and public education programs
• Inspecting buildings for fire and life safety hazards
• Training to respond to emergencies of all types, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

The students asked excellent questions and were great listeners. We have no doubt that some of these young men and women may one day become the next generation of firefighters serving our community.
