Medical Affairs and Commercial are working more closely together. That raises questions about how field roles are designed, where they overlap, and what each is there to contribute.

Talmedica founder Christine Ong, PharmD joined MSLead Chronicles to discuss “Blurred Lines: The Evolution of Medical and Commercial Roles.”

We spend years developing expertise in Pharma and Biotech. But what happens once you get the leadership opportunity?

The transition from expert to leader changes how you create value, and it’s one we don’t always prepare for particularly well.

In this week’s Talmedica Brief, I explore what changes after the promotion and share a new practical resource for professionals navigating their first 90 days in leadership.

Read it here:
The Leadership Transition We Don’t Prepare For

Getting the leadership role is one transition. Becoming the leader the role requires is another.

Her work is non-promotional, but her team sits under Commercial. Why would a company structure it that way—wouldn’t it make more sense to have it under Medical Affairs?

“My work is non-promotional, but my Medical Education team sits under Commercial. Why wouldn’t it sit in Medical Affairs?” It’s a fair question, and it exposes a bigger assumption in pharma: Commercial is not all promotional, and Medical Affairs is not the only place where non-promotional me...

If you know someone in pharma or biotech who was recently laid off, please send this to them.

I’ve been watching the layoff announcements continue across the industry, and I kept thinking about what happens after the announcement.

There’s the practical stuff—severance, health insurance, finances—but also the emotional piece, the pressure to immediately update your résumé and start applying, and the bigger question: What do I actually do next?

So I put together a free resource:

The First 30 Days After a Pharma or Biotech Layoff

It walks through what to think about in the first 72 hours, financial runway, taking stock of what you’ve built, reading the market before rushing to apply, and building a more intentional strategy for what comes next.

You don’t need to figure out your entire career immediately. And sometimes the smartest next move is not trying to recreate the job you just lost.

Free guide - link below.
Please share it with someone who might need it.

A grounded guide to getting your footing, protecting your runway, and making a strong next move

At Talmedica, we help pharma and biotech teams and professionals clarify positioning, strengthen communication, and translate experience into credible leadership impact.

Instead of obsessing over resume, job applications, focus on your positioning:

Here’s why:

Why the same experience gets hired in one room and rejected in another.

Takeda is cutting roughly 4,500 roles to reduce management layers.

Novartis recently trimmed roles tied to its U.S. Medical Affairs team.

Across pharma, the message keeps showing up:

Fewer layers.
Leaner teams.
More pressure on whoever remains.

Now read that against what the industry says it wants more of:

Sharper interpretation.

More context.

Better judgment in the moment.

Companies are cutting headcount while raising the expectations for the people who stay.

Most professionals read that as a higher bar.

But I think many are reading the market wrong.

The bar did not simply get higher. It moved.

AI has raised the floor. More people can prepare faster, summarize faster, synthesize faster, and sound fluent faster than ever.

So the old signals still matter — years, titles, launch experience, therapeutic expertise. But they may not separate you the way they used to.

What separates people now sits somewhere else.

And many experienced professionals are still competing on the part of the market AI just made less differentiating.

I wrote about what actually changed in this week’s Pharma Insider Brief:

The Ceiling Didn’t Get Higher. It Got Narrower.

What pharma restructuring reveals about the new rules of career progression.

💼 Pharma & Biotech Layoffs: Who Actually Gets Severance Pay? 📊

No one wants to think about layoffs, but when they happen, one question matters: Do you have a severance package—or are you walking away with nothing?

I ran a poll to see what professionals are actually getting, and here’s what we found:

📊 Key Findings:
✅ 78% of industry professionals received some form of severance.
✅ 49% received $20K or more.
❌ 22% got nothing.
❌ Outside of the industry? 57% received zero severance pay.

Severance isn’t guaranteed. And if you’re relying on a job to provide stability, it’s time to think about your career strategy.

🛑 Are you prepared if layoffs happen?
🛑 Do you know how to protect your career long-term?
