THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION — MAY 2023
Total employment increased by 339,000 in May, and the unemployment rate rose by 0.3 percentage point to 3.7 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, government, health care, construction, transportation and warehousing, and social assistance.

U.S. employers added 253,000 new jobs in April and the unemployment rate ticked down to 3.4 percent, one of the lowest levels on record, according to the latest report from BLS. While a few other sectors are losing steam, most of the new jobs were reported in leisure and hospitality, professional business services, and health care.
