👁️ World Sight Day: Safer Homes Start with Better Light

As our parents age, their eyes need more light to see clearly, and they adjust more slowly between bright and dark rooms. A dim hallway, a shadowy staircase, or a dark path to the bathroom at night can quietly become a fall risk.

This World Sight Day, take a few minutes to walk through your loved one's home and check:

💡 Hallways & stairs – Are they well lit, with switches at both the top and bottom?
🌙 Night-time paths – Add plug-in night lights from the bedroom to the bathroom.
🔆 Glare – Use soft, even lighting and sheer curtains to cut harsh glare from windows and shiny floors.
🍳 Task areas – Brighter lights over the kitchen counter, reading chair, and sink.
🔌 Easy access – Lamps or touch/motion-sensor lights within reach of the bed.
👓 Eye exams – Encourage a yearly eye check. Changes in vision are easier to manage when caught early.

The first few days at home can make a big difference in a safe, comfortable recovery.
1. Review the medication list 💊
Make sure you understand new medications, discontinued medications, dosages, and schedules. Ask the healthcare provider or pharmacist about anything unclear.
2. Prepare a safe home environment 🏠
Clear walkways, improve lighting, remove trip hazards, and make frequently used items easy to reach.
3. Plan meals ahead 🍽️
Have simple, nutritious meals available and follow any dietary instructions provided at discharge.
4. Create a caregiving schedule 📅
Decide who will help with personal care, meals, transportation, appointments, medication reminders, and other daily needs.
