Does whoever builds your models know which lift the crew is running first?

The common read is that modeling is a software job. A surface can be geometrically correct and still miss the sequence: no phase limit at the haul road, nothing separating the area the crew will stockpile on for three weeks.

I build models around how the work gets built: phase limits as their own named surfaces, subgrade and finish kept apart, and files in the formats each unit on the job loads.

Send MODEL and I will share the sequencing questions I ask on a new model.

What does it cost to shoot two more control points at the back of the site?

Twenty minutes with a rover. It feels optional because the localization has been fine all month on the front half, where its points actually sit.

Run it 1,800 feet past the last of those points and the back pads read on grade and get built low.

On a GPS support call I ask for the point list the localization was built on, then compare it to where the crew is working.

How far is your rover working from the nearest point in its localization today?

I ask one thing when a quantity comes in round: what got rounded, the area or the depth?

Round numbers usually cover an assumption somebody was not sure about. Eight thousand yards of export is a stripping depth decision wearing a tidy number, and it stops being tidy when the trucks start counting.

The takeoffs I send out keep the calculated quantity next to the assumed depth and the document the depth came from, so you can see what the rounding covered.

Look at your last dirt summary and count how many lines end in zeros.

I ask which software the crew loads files into, not just which machines they run.

The export dialog does not care. It writes a clean file, and the office reads clean as loadable. Meanwhile the cab is on an older display version, or the grade checker has rights to one project folder and not this one.

So I confirm the format and version the field is actually running, then send machine and rover files for every unit on the job in one package.

What does your crew open your files with, and when did that last change?

A GPS problem with three people on it is not being worked. It is being handed around.

I have been on the phone at 7:40 with a foreman who had already called the office twice, and the office had already called the dealer. Ninety minutes gone and nobody had checked into a known point yet.

On a TCL support call I take the problem in order over the phone with whoever is holding the rover: control, then what the machine actually opened, then the display.

Send GPS and I will send the troubleshooting path I work through.

TCL Consulting offers nationwide remote GPS support — file uploads, troubleshooting, and real-time assistance without waiting for an on-site visit. Keep crews moving and downtime low.

Asphalt tons are not a paving number. They are a thickness decision somebody made three sheets away.

Three checks I run: the section detail, the plan limit, and whether the drive lanes and the parking bays carry the same depth. Two questions: which sheet governs when they disagree, and is the binder counted separately.

On my takeoffs each paving line carries the thickness, the area it came off, and the detail sheet that set it, with the limit drawn on the plan next to the total.

Pull your last asphalt line and see if it can name the sheet its thickness came from.

A tie-in that looks smooth on screen is not the same thing as a tie-in that reaches the construction limit.

The shading blends because the software will happily interpolate across sixty feet of nothing. Out on the ground that daylight line lands ten feet past the easement, or dies short and leaves a berm the crew has to hand-work.

On the models I build, the existing surface gets carried well past the work area and the daylight is checked against the actual limit line on the plan, not against where the triangles decide to stop.

Where does your model stop, and where does your permit say the work stops?

Fifteen minutes at the desk, or 400 feet of base torn out. Same conflict.

The apron detail calls for 8 inches of aggregate. The paving note two sheets over says 6. Neither looks wrong on its own page, so nobody chases it and whoever gets there first picks.

That review feels optional up until the concrete is down.

When I mark up a set I read the details against the plan notes for the same area, and every disagreement leaves with the sheet, the location, both callouts, and the decision I need back.

Got two notes fighting on a current set? Send both sheets.

If two files in the folder are called site_final and site_final2, which one carries the stone?

That folder gets opened at six in the morning by somebody who was not in the office when the surfaces were built. The office knows which one is subgrade. The cab has a name and a date.

So the files I hand off are named for what the surface does on the ground, and the note that goes with them says which one the machine should be sitting on today.

Reply MODEL for the list I run through before a file leaves my desk.

The expensive plan questions live between two sheets, where neither designer thinks the answer is theirs.

Nobody is looking there because both sheets are fine on their own. The paving detail works. The structure detail works. Put them together and the inlet sits an inch above the mat, and that inch belongs to whoever gets blamed first.

TCL reads sets sheet against sheet and gives each conflict an owner: the sheets that disagree, the location, and the one decision being requested.

Which question on your current job has been passed around three times without landing on anybody?
