I lived this cycle for almost 30 years.

Y2K.
9/11.
The housing crash.
Pandemic.
Grid scare headlines every six months.

Same pattern. Different decade.
A good man feels the shift.
He senses responsibility rising.
He opens his phone… and suddenly he’s behind.
More gear.
More warnings.
More urgency.

I’ve been in preparedness since the mid to late ’90s.
And here’s what I learned the hard way:
Buying before thinking creates tension inside a house.

A calm plan creates confidence.
That’s why I wrote Before You Buy Anything.
Not a gear list.
Not a panic manual.
Not fear dressed up as wisdom.
It’s about slowing down long enough to build order first.

Because your family doesn’t need a frantic provider.
They need a steady one.
If you’ve felt that pressure lately, you’re not crazy.
But you also don’t have to react to it.

Build calm. Then build capability.

Today is International Podcast Day—and I’ve been behind the mic since 2014.

Over the years, podcasting has become a way to share real stories, connect with people who care about faith, family, and preparedness, and keep conversations alive that matter.

We’ve built a family of shows, each with its own voice:

Prep Comms — practical radio & emergency communication for families.

Milam in the Middle — my son’s take on life, humor, and growing up.

HamRadio 360 — the podcast that started it all, with over a million downloads.

Modern Christian Men — where faith meets real-world manhood.

The Marriage Creative — building strong marriages through shared vision and honest talk.

Scan the QR code in the post (or in our profile) to find them all in one spot.

I’m grateful for everyone who’s listened along the way—and excited for what’s still ahead.

Most people assume I’m talking about radio for natural disasters.

And yes—storms happen.

But honestly?

We use radios for way more than that.

Calling kids in for dinner from the backyard

Check-ins during co-op or errands

Parking lot logistics when your phone battery dies

It’s not dramatic.
It’s just practical.

That’s what Family Connect is all about:
Making backup communication feel normal, not extreme.

Because peace of mind doesn’t start in a crisis.
It starts with practice.

Real talk?

I’ve been the dad who hoped things wouldn’t go wrong.

I’ve also been the one in uniform when they did.

And let me tell you—
when the phones go silent, the first thing people want is a voice they love.

That’s why I’m here.

Not to panic you.
Not to prep you into oblivion.

Just to help you build a simple plan so that if your family ever says,
“Can you hear me?”

…you can say,
“Yes. I’ve got you.”

One of the most powerful things you can give your kids?

Confidence in the unknown.

Not just in school…
but in life.

My kids know how to use a walkie-talkie.
They know where to go if we’re separated.
They know how to think instead of panic.

And that didn’t come from a prepper mindset.

It came from intentional parenting—
and a simple plan.

The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s peace.

And that kind of confidence?
It starts at home.

It’s World Chocolate Day.

And if your house is anything like ours…
someone definitely knows how to hide the good stuff.

You know what else needs a “just in case” plan?

Communication.

I know—chocolate and radio don’t exactly go together.

But think about it:

We plan for snacks.

We plan for spills.

We even plan for backup outfits in the van.

So why not a backup plan for staying in touch—when the phones don’t work?

It doesn’t have to be weird. Or techy. Or stressful.

Just simple, smart, and built for families like yours.

Chocolate melts. Phones fail.
Your plan shouldn’t.

There are a lot of radios out there.
But only a few that make sense for everyday families.

Some need a license.
Some don’t.
Some sound great… until you realize they won’t even reach past the backyard.

This guide walks you through 5 legal radio options families can actually use — even if you’re just starting out, or you’ve only ever touched a walkie-talkie on a hiking trip.

We’ll cover: • What’s legal without a license
• What works best for small farms, home use, or neighborhood setups
• What’s worth it for real family communication — not just gear collecting

Around here, we believe communication should be simple, affordable, and built to actually work when it matters.

That’s the whole idea behind the Family Connect System — and if you’ve been waiting for something non-technical, family-focused, and finally doable… it’s coming.

Fireworks. Cookouts. Flags on porches.

Today we celebrate freedom—
and for me, that includes the freedom to stay connected to my family… even when the grid doesn’t cooperate.

Because liberty isn’t just about history.
It’s about being able to protect what matters now.

I’m not into fear or panic.

But I am into resilience, faith, and knowing my wife and kids have a plan if something goes sideways.

Freedom means being prepared—
not just for the big stuff, but for the quiet moments when the phones don’t work and you still need to say:
“I’m okay. Are you?”

Happy 4th, friends. Stay safe. Stay close. Stay connected.

Talking to your kids on walkie-talkies isn’t weird.

It’s smart.

It's one of the simplest ways to build confidence, peace of mind, and backup communication skills without screens.

No apps. No towers.
Just clear connection—at home, in the yard, at the park.

My 8-year-old knows how to check battery levels, call for a parent, and switch channels if needed.

Not because I drilled it into her—
but because we made it normal.

You don’t need to wait for a crisis to start preparing.
You just need a radio… and a little intentionality.
