A Little Piece of Cropper History
This week, iRock LLC had the opportunity to remove a long-abandoned structure in Cropper, Kentucky that had been reclaimed by time, weather, and even trees growing through the roof.
What started as a simple demolition project quickly turned into a local history lesson.
After sharing photos with local residents, several people identified the building as the former Cropper Post Office. Community members shared memories of visiting the post office as children, buying a Coke from the machine inside, and seeing familiar faces behind the counter. Others recalled family members who worked there during the 1970s.
While researching the site, we discovered postal records showing that the Cropper Post Office operated from 1882 until 1984, with the community originally known as Croppers Depot dating back to 1851. Cropper grew around the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, making it an important stop in the area's early history.
Although the building had long since reached the end of its life, it was fascinating to uncover the stories connected to it before it disappeared forever.
