Experiencing new places is pretty high on our list of goals. Sometimes that looks like a quick day trip up north to run through the trees. Sometimes it means hopping on a long haul flight to Thailand with a laptop, backpacks, and probably too many tabs open.

Either way, getting outside of our normal routine gives us something we deeply value: new perspective. New places make us notice different details, question our assumptions, pay attention to how people move through spaces, communicate, gather, solve problems, tell stories, and create a sense of belonging. We come home with fresh ideas and a different way of seeing what is right in front of us.

That perspective is part of what we bring to our client work. We are not only looking at your brand or organization from inside the systems you already know. We bring experience across nonprofit communications, community engagement, art, business, humanitarian work, place based storytelling, and travel across nearly 30 countries.

It helps us ask different questions, spot connections that may be easy to miss, and bring fresh thinking to teams that have been staring at the same problem for a long time.

Sometimes you need someone who understands the work. Sometimes you also need someone who can see it from a different angle.

There are certain little details you remember long after the transaction is over.

Michael ordered this coffee at an airport, and when it arrived, there was a tiny plane stenciled into the foam. It was simple. Probably inexpensive. But it immediately connected the experience to the place we were in and made an ordinary cup of coffee feel considered.

That is user experience.

It is not always a giant campaign, an expensive redesign, or some flashy moment. Sometimes it is a small detail that tells people someone thought about how they would feel, what they would notice, and what they might remember.

Those details shape how people experience your brand, your mission, your art, your city. They create connection. They give people something to talk about. And when they are rooted in strategy, they can turn a routine interaction into something that actually sticks.

What is a small detail from a brand or place that you still remember years later?

Creativity has the power to reconnect people to themselves, their communities, and one another.

That belief sits underneath almost everything we do.

We have seen art help people process experiences they did not yet have words for. We have watched a shared creative experience turn strangers into friends. We have seen stories help people recognize themselves in someone whose life looks completely different from their own. We have watched neighborhoods begin to feel more connected when people are given places to gather, make, listen, and belong.

Creativity is not only about making something beautiful. Sometimes it helps us remember who we are. Sometimes it gives us a way back to each other. Sometimes it creates the first opening for a conversation that would not have happened otherwise.

That is why we care so deeply about the stories organizations tell, the experiences businesses create, the art people make, and the places cities build for their communities. At their best, all of those things can create connection.

Where has creativity helped you feel more connected to yourself, a place, or another person?

Michael has been pursuing art since he was a child, sitting in on art classes while his mom went to class. Creativity has always been one of the ways he makes sense of the world.

When we first met, I remember asking him why he painted butterflies so often. He told me it was because butterflies begin as caterpillars, belly to the ground, pushing through the dirt, before transforming into something that can fly.

I have always loved that. So much of what we go through becomes part of the story we carry, and sometimes the hardest parts become the most beautiful and transformative.

That is why artists telling their stories is so important. We do not only connect with the finished work. We connect with the experiences, questions, memories, and meaning behind it. Their stories meet our own, and suddenly the art resonates in a different way.

Artists, what is one part of your story that keeps finding its way into your work?

And if you need help finding the words to tell your story, we would love to help.

“Can you just make it pretty?”

Cue internal eye roll.

I think this has become a trigger question for me. My insides start boiling a little every time I hear it.

I know it is usually meant as a compliment. The person is trying to say, “You are good at making things look beautiful.” But when you have spent years thinking about audience, emotion, story, strategy, behavior, hierarchy, timing, and intention, having all of that reduced to “make it pretty” can feel incredibly degrading.

Because good design is not decoration.

A graphic can be beautiful and still say nothing. It can be polished and still confuse the audience. It can look incredible and completely miss the point.

The strongest creative work has depth behind it. There is a reason for the words, the image, the order, the tone, the space, the call to action. Strategy gives the design something to do.

So yes, I can make it pretty. But I would much rather help make it clear, intentional, and connected to the people you are actually trying to reach.

Creative people, what phrase instantly triggers your internal eye roll?

Your business is not broken. It has simply grown beyond the language you started with.

Your baby is growing up.

Maybe your website no longer sounds like you. Maybe your social media feels disconnected from your actual work. Maybe your logo, emails, pitch, flyers, and sales language all seem to be telling slightly different stories.

That does not necessarily mean you need to start over.

It may mean you need to pause, realign, and build a stronger foundation for where you are going next.

Our Foundation Package helps emerging businesses and organizations clarify their story, audience, messaging, visual direction, and communication priorities.

Be honest: has your business outgrown the way you currently talk about it? Comment YES if this feels familiar.

This is what a lot of good work actually looks like.

A laptop open. Too many tabs. Coffee within reach. Breakfast at the desk. Notes scattered around. A thank you card tucked into the middle of the day. People trying to create, respond, solve problems, meet deadlines, and keep everything moving at once.

Your team is probably already full of talented people. Writers. Designers. Social media managers. Program staff. Fundraisers. Marketing professionals. People who know the organization, understand the history, and have been carrying more than most people realize.

They do not need a replacement.

They need clear priorities. Shared direction. Better alignment between leadership and communication. Space to step back from constant production and look at the bigger picture.

As someone who has led creative and communications teams, I know how frustrating it can be when an outside consultant walks in acting like the people inside the organization have failed. That is not how we work.

We come alongside teams, bring fresh perspective, help identify the disconnects, and create more room for the expertise already in the room to actually work together.

What would give your team the most breathing room right now?

Building a strong marketing and communications strategy is not always fast, flashy work.

Sometimes it is slow, deep work. The kind that happens over months and years through listening, asking better questions, building trust, finding the right stories, and helping an organization communicate with more clarity and consistency over time.

CURRENTS is Mobile Baykeeper’s quarterly print magazine, created to tell the stories of the people, places, and work connected to life on Mobile Bay.

I have the privilege of working directly with the Mobile Baykeeper communications team to help set strategy, and CURRENTS is one of the outcomes of that thoughtful, ongoing work. The magazine itself is very much the product of their team, and I am incredibly proud to work alongside them as they continue shaping it into something people want to read, hold onto, and share.

Seeing CURRENTS sitting in the Patagonia Headquarters was a quiet little full circle moment. Not because the work was suddenly more valuable there, but because it reminded me how far a well told story can travel when a team commits to doing the work with care.

That is the kind of communications work we believe in. Thoughtful. Strategic. Rooted in real people. Built to last longer than a single post or campaign.

When our neighbor Jen decided to open a massage studio, we could not have been more excited to partner with her in launching the business. We were bought into her vision early, especially because her model included a give back element that resonated deeply with us. And yes, we very generously volunteered for practice massages along the way.

That is the kind of work we love most. Helping small businesses, artists, entrepreneurs, mission driven organizations, and even cities create something that gives people a stronger sense of connection and belonging. We have worked alongside them to tell their story, connect with the audiences they are trying to reach, and build the language and strategy around their mission.

Sometimes that looks like helping a new business launch with clarity. Sometimes it means helping an organization reconnect its messaging to the people it serves. Sometimes it means helping a city tell the story of a place and create more room for people to feel like they belong there.

For us, the best work starts when we genuinely believe in what someone is building. Jen gave us that kind of opportunity, and we were honored to help her bring it to life.

What are you building right now that you wish more people understood or connected with?

We have intentionally built a business that fits our life, not the other way around.

We love experiencing new places. It fuels us. It gives us fresh perspective, new ideas, and a different way of seeing the work in front of us. But we are also deeply passionate about what we do, and thankfully, good strategy, storytelling, and creative direction do not require us to stay in one spot or sit in the same office every day.

Last week, we took work with us to California. We were in town to meet with a client, tucked in a Disney day, spent a little time body boarding at the beach, and still made space for a few client calls along the way.

That rhythm is part of who we are. We are curious people. We like to notice the details, meet people, experience how places are designed, pay attention to what creates connection, and bring all of that back into the way we think and work.

We also care deeply about building a life our son gets to be part of. Not one where family waits on the other side of the work, but one where he gets to see us create, travel, build relationships, solve problems, and still make room for joy.

That perspective shapes Denson Creative Co more than any formal business philosophy ever could.

We are not trying to build a company that keeps us tied to one desk. We are building a creative life, and we are grateful for clients who trust us enough to come along for the ride.
