The owner of 21st Century Chimney Sweep says he's dealing with an increasingly complex 21st-century problem: online scams.

Jason Clough's family has served chimney owners in the Lawrence area since the 1970s.

But for roughly a year, about a dozen of Clough's customers have been targeted by scammers posing as his company.

“When we have illegitimate people come in, they’re using that trust that we created, they’re eroding that trust that we’ve created, and they’re really making it easier for them to scam people," said Clough, owner of 21st Century Chimney Sweep.

We have been serving Lawrence since 1978, and family owned the whole time. This year there has been a relentless group of scammers targeting the chimney industry in and around Lawrence. They get top ranking on Google, real companies barely appear on Google. I have dozens of accounts from customers who hired these scammers and have horror stories to tell. Some called the police, most pay them to get them out of their home and then call us for a 2nd opinion or to fix what the scammers messed up.

Most recently a scammer showed up to a home outside of Lawrence, told the customer the chimney was fine even though the customer knew it wasn't, tried to charge $560 to "sanitize" the chimney and still insisted on payment before leaving.

I've had a few customers tell me the scammers presented themselves as 21st Century Chimney, I even called them anonymously once and was told they had bought my company.

We do masonry fireplace renovations as well!
This is a before and after pic of a fireplace we rebuilt in Lawrence. The old fireplace was performing very poorly and the whole house smelled like smoke. The issue was due to poor construction and a negative house pressure. The second picture shows what should be clean concrete blocks that make up the structure of the chimney. They are coated in creosote and have many gaps allowing creosote to spread throughout the house, this caused the smell.
We sealed all the gaps, installed a new stainless steel liner an a PriorFire Retrofit fireplace which creates significantly more heat. The home no longer smells like smoke, indoor air quality is much better!

We're trying to figure out why someone shipped us this box all the way from Denmark when we have so many boxes right here in Kansas. Maybe someday we'll see what's in it and figure out something fun to do with it! Check back later!
