Maria began learning artisanship at 12 years old when her family passed down techniques used by her ancestors.

"I am an artisan and product designer in Guatemala who has been crafting beaded jewelry for 9 years. I also offer my skills teaching workshops to travelers, with proceeds benefiting our Center for the Elderly that we have here in Guatemala. Thank you for supporting our work.”

How it's made matters. This is Fashion Revolution week which marks
the anniversary of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh. Rana Plaza was a clothing factory making apparel for some of the biggest global fashion brands.

More than 5,000 employees worked in the building's precarious, dangerous conditions- mostly young women. More than 1,100 died in the collapse.

While the fashion industry has some modest improvements since then, human rights abuses and environmental degradation remain pervasive.

How can you help? Choose brands that honor human rights, respect the environment, pay fair wages and empower their workers. 🌿

While we are against hyperconsumerism, we are FOR knowing how the products you do buy are made & how the producers, artisans and employees behind the scenes are treated. How it’s made matters. 🌿

Time to ! Today's featured artisan is Concepcion, one of our partners in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala.

Concepcion has been making beaded jewelry for more than 20 years - a skill she learned from her family as well from the non-profit where she works. Concepcion is also a skilled weaver & enjoys handcrafting a variety of different products.

"I am a single mother and widow with one daughter, I like to work in beaded products. I want to work more, but we need more people who support us, value and buy our products to be able to work more. I am very happy working with our fair trade partners and want to say thank you to the people who are buying the products we have made.” - Concepcion
