🛑 STOP SCROLLING! 🛑
I have a serious question, and I genuinely want to hear from people of all backgrounds.
At 41 years old, I had never seen or even heard of Boyz-n-the-Hood until I attended Alabama State University in 2019. My professor always asked before assigning the movie if anyone in class had never seen it because he never wanted to assume everyone had. To everyone’s surprise, I was the ONLY person in the classroom who had never seen or heard of it.
After watching the movie and participating in a classroom debate, I walked away with a lot of thoughts and questions.
What amazes me is that this movie came out in 1991, yet many of the issues it addressed are still relevant today. Violence. Parenting. Absent fathers. Peer pressure. Community influence. Personal responsibility. Broken systems. The list goes on.
One of the biggest things that stood out to me was Doughboy.
Personally, I believe Doughboy was a product of his environment, but I also believe his mother played a major role in shaping who he became. From the time they were children, she appeared to treat Ricky and Doughboy differently. Ricky received encouragement and support, while Doughboy often seemed criticized, dismissed, and expected to fail.
Now, before anyone jumps on me, I am NOT saying Doughboy wasn’t responsible for his own choices. He absolutely was. But I often wonder how different his life might have been if he had received the same love, support, and expectations that Ricky received.
Doughboy was my favorite character in the movie because he felt real. His pain felt real. His anger felt real. His hurt felt real. To me, it never felt like Ice Cube was acting. It felt like I was watching someone who had lived that reality.
My other favorite character was Furious Styles because he represented the guidance, accountability, and fatherhood that so many young people need.
Now let’s talk.
Who failed Doughboy the most: his mother, the community, the streets, or himself?
