A Workplace Comfort Ritual Since Forever

A tradition at work started by my colleague Elisabeth Flynn, one of the best writers I know, was to have on hand the latest editions of the Associated Press Stylebook and "The Elements of Style" on hand.

====> Separately, as an undergraduate writing major, my writing professor, Dr. Andy Solomon required these two books for all and his lessons still speak to me to this day, I kid you not, I can still hear his voice telling me when and where to put the comma, semicolon, colon, and to "show me - don't tell me!"

📕 Every time a new edition came out, Elisabeth and I got them for the entire team and for ourselves. New staffer? They got the books. The books we feel are timeless and used by creatives across the country.

*** This week the two books started to arrive at the workplaces or homes of my current team members and I needed to be clear: they are NOT being given these books because anyone thinks their writing is less than stellar.

1. The two books are meant to be a guide for elevating a message that meet the standards used in the media.

2. Google provides too many opinions about writing, many of which are bad.

3. When we encounter a dispute about style (e.g., is the Oxford comma in vogue?), we can resolve it by going to a trusted source for leading news organizations.

====> What is one of your workplace rituals?

Volunteer as a Scholarship Reviewer with Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI)

While other volunteer opportunities exist (contact Executive Director, Nicole Baker), right now there's a seasonal push to recruit scholarship reviewers.

*** Professional bias, I'm a fan of WMI and its leadership. RPM Consulting Group guided a five-year strategic planning engagement for Wells Mountain Initiative, aligning board governance, executive leadership, and programmatic priorities around a disciplined growth strategy.

🗺️ The work included a sequenced implementation roadmap and market study identifying funding pathways to expand the organization’s scholarship and community development efforts across several African countries.

🧧 For many students, a WMI scholarship is more than financial support - it is a catalyst that unlocks opportunity, leadership, and the ability to shape a brighter future.

🌍 WMI is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that supports talented students from low-income communities, primarily across Sub-Saharan Africa, who show strong academic promise and a commitment to service.

👩‍🎓 Scholars pursue bachelor’s degrees within their home countries or regions and go on to become teachers, health professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who expand opportunity for others. The WMI scholarship is unique as it provides support for bachelor's studies within the applicant's home nation or region.

*** To join the Spring 2026 volunteer team, complete the reviewer sign-up form by 3/1/2026: 👉 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSduCp7T04SPQpmDq9DbAQI4sMrRiGi4v9s_fB32mRj-5_-_uw/viewform

Rest in Peace & Power, Rev. Jesse Jackson

For me, Rev. Jesse Jackson represents my first indication of any public ally in politics, which was and still is important to me as it relates to my work today.

Because of allies like Jackson, equality is more present for more people in the workplace.

===> I was 14 about to turn 15 in the summer of 1984, and I watched a portion of the National Democratic Convention in San Francisco.

I was unaware that he had already come out in favor of rights for g**s and le****ns and yet at that time in the sweltering summer of '84, his mention of people like me made me feel seen and respected.

As I learned more of his place in the world later that year, his messaging and presence was my first glimmer of hope that things could ultimately swing toward a more comfortable world in which to live as an out gay person and yet I did not fully comprehend at the time what I was experiencing.

May Rev. Jackson rest in peace and rest in power.

During What Quarter in the Year Shall We Ask for Support?

===> Short answer, all four.

📉 Yes, giving in the United States has sadly experienced a structural, long-term decline in the percentage (66% to 46%) of households that participate (Source: Osili, Gupta, Han et al, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2024).

📊Yes, the overall donor base is eroding, and yet total dollars moving towards charitable dollars is still increasing most every year. 📈

📅 We have learned from donor data (sources covering donor-advised funds, foundations, and individual/household giving data), that the time of the year donors prefer to make gifts varies greatly.

💵 Although the 4th quarter is the most popular time for giving, a large % of individuals and households actually prefer making gifts earlier in the year (Source: Church Mutual Insurance Company, S.I.), with choices varying by generation.

***For 2026: While overall giving is expected to go down (Church, 2026), folks in Gen Z (64%), Millennials (58%), Gen X (66%), and Boomers (68%) reported they will either maintain or increase their giving.

===> In-kind, ACH/EFT, Donor-advised funds, text-to-give, and other giving methods are increasingly popular, a reminder to me how important it is to consider having multiple platforms and means to contribute.

Fighting Stigma and Preventing HIV

***Last Friday, in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), I attended Prevention Point Philadelphia's (PPP) program.

===> Worth noting, the nonprofit has enrolled one of the largest populations in preventive medicine for HIV in the USA.

⚕️ February 7 the actual day for NBHAAD, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black communities.

🏥 First observed in 1999, NBHAAD highlights the importance of community involvement and improved access to HIV education, prevention, testing, and treatment services.

🩺 Medicine has come such a long way since the height of the AIDS epidemic.

💊 As we already know, people living with HIV can now have long, healthy lives with the proper treatment.

*** However, we have a long way to go towards lowering stigma, discrimination, income inequality, and other factors that affect people's risk of acquiring HIV and ability to access treatment.

🌎 Visit here to learn about PPP's HIV testing, prevention, and treatment programs: https://ppponline.org/medical-services

“Everything Looks Like Failure in the Middle” – Kanter’s Law

===> And yet it is not a failure. I credit Rosabeth Moss Kanter for the "trough of despair," a term used to describe the point where a project or initiative appears to be a failure in its middle stages.

🗺️ This phenomenon happens within the context of organizational change, strategic planning, and fundraising plan implementation

*** My dissertation cited Kanter widely, and the "law" she points to is that "everything looks like a failure in the middle" because the initial enthusiasm wears off and the difficult work of putting things into motion, roadblocks, and unexpected problems arise.

🫧 Possible solution: this period can lead to anger and hopelessness, making it crucial for leaders to provide encouragement and maintain a long-term perspective to prevent people from giving up.

🤔 A reminder to us all as leaders: we can recognize the feelings of despair are normal and take the opportunity to find a strategy to help others persevere.

===> We can look more closely at addressing reasons for any resistance and provide encouragement to others who might be experiencing something similar.

*** Anyone experience this for themselves? You are in good company.

Retired Pro Soccer Player, Tony Bono Inducted to Falcons Hall of Fame

Last Saturday, the Philadelphia Falcons Soccer Club inducted former professional soccer player, Tony Bono, to the Hall of Fame.

Hardly a dry eye in the house when he spoke about his experiences in his professional career and also later with the Falcons, a team I have been a part of since March 1997.

We are proud of him and his many contributions to soccer both on and off the field and he guided and coached many to be the best possible team members over the past two plus decades.

It was an easy decision to sponsor the event especially given my mad respect for his presence in our midst. Thank you, Tony.

William Way LGBT Community Center Appoints New Leader

🎇 Congratulations to Darius McLean, Ed.D. on his new role - I am both excited for him and optimistic for the nonprofit.

===> Thoughtful executive transitions are essential to a nonprofit's long-term health, especially when a longstanding visionary (Chris Bartlett) completes 15 years of his leadership term.

🧱 In July 2024, the organization intentionally expanded the responsibilities of Dr. Darius McLean while Chris continued to mentor Darius.

🌎 Over the past two years, the Board has had the opportunity to witness Darius’s leadership, vision, and growth firsthand.

*** The process: In October through December 2025, we conducted 29 interviews of staff, key constituents, community leaders, executive search professionals, funders, and past board leaders who provided invaluable feedback and research findings to enable the board to more effectively update the job description of executive director.

Thanks to Kimberly Allen, Donna Saul Millen, Zena Lum, and Tracy Canter Katz, as well as the Board Subcommittee: Corey Lefkowitz, Alix Casler, and Richard Perry.

🥅 The goal was to have in place an updated and refreshed role for the organization to more readily meet the moment, to take advantage of the available and possible opportunities, and to address the present and not-too-distant hurdles ahead of the nonprofit.

Next: Darius McLean felt in December 2025 that the new updated role was attractive and on 12.15.2025 the board voted unanimously for McLean to take the helm as of January 1, 2026, after six years in other senior roles at the Center.

🗺️ Roadmap: While there is still much work to do, a new process is now in place for scheduled periodic evaluations that strengthens not only the Center's governance, but also the ability of executive leadership to manage with the support of the board of directors.

Congratulations, Darius, and to the Board of Directors: May your 2026 be even brighter, building on previous years of success.
