JA Creatives Consulting, LLC

JA Creatives Consulting, LLC What if the word finances brought tranquility rather than chaos to mind? The authenticity of your art is your biggest asset. Pfft. That is ridiculous. was founded.

I work with artists to supply them with insight into financial fundamentals and deliver confidence to question and negotiate any contract so that they retain their authenticity. My mission is to support you in maintaining it. There’s a stereotype that artists are unable or unwilling to be business savvy. Studies from the University of British Columbia show learning music enhances your ability to l

earn STEM disciplines. Your musical ability creates a superpower to understand and take control of the business of your music career. And let’s be clear. Your music career...is a business. Before you sign your next contract: You need to understand the financial implications of the deal - what it will lock you into - so that you maintain the authenticity of your art. I’ve spent 25+ years in the music industry, at venues, promoter offices, and in financial departments. I’ve seen firsthand the areas that catch artists off guard, take cash out of your pocket, and circumvents your rights, like, third-party ticket sales, changes to artist’s payments, and the impact of corporate sponsorship. I found myself continuously frustrated by the injustice of the industry taking advantage of artist’s excitement to create and perform. When the world shut down in 2020, I saw musicians seize the opportunity to get back to their roots, embrace new technologies and create. I wanted to be there to support you, the enterprising artists, who’ve harnessed your ingenuity by generating tools, to protect your rejuvenated creativity. With that in mind, JA Creatives Consulting, LLC. My mission is to support all artists and musicians in retaining your biggest asset, your authenticity, by:

Empowering creatives, like you, with insight into the financial fundamentals that enable you to create. Providing confidence to question and negotiate any term, in any contract, before signing on that dotted line, no matter how excited you are to land your deal. Ultimately, as my client, you gain the financial skills necessary to produce your art and have the peace of mind your money is working for you.

So excited to share with you my first Podcast interview with Stephanie Belcher and her show, When Songs Mean Business.

We talk about how musicians can improve their profitability and operate as a business without compromising their artistry.

Plus, I never pass up a chance to talk about Jeffrey Gaines or the late, great Jim Croce.

Such is the nature of busking - musicians provide ambiance, beauty, and relief from our internal monolog and are generally ignored for it. But, it is still one of the greatest ways for a musician to work on their skills as a performer because to do it takes courage and a tremendous love of music.

“ In Washington DC, at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After about four minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.

About four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

At six minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

At ten minutes, a three-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent - without exception - forced their children to move on quickly.

At forty-five minutes: The musician played continuously. Only six people stopped and listened for a short while. About twenty gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

After one hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the D.C. Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

This experiment raised several questions:

In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

If so, do we stop to appreciate it?

Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…

How many other things are we missing as we rush through life?”
