Summer Safety: Clean House
Subtitle: Sucker Punch Hazards Before They Punch You.
Take a minute today and read the label on the chemicals under your sink. I bet you have some bad stuff in there. There is a never ending parade of chemicals that we use that can cause symptoms from mild irritation to serious acute pains. The chemical industry offers a wide variety of products to clean and disinfect your environment. So here are some simple questions to ask yourself.
First ask yourself what are you scared of? Are you using antimicrobial and antibacterial chemicals because you have a weak immune system? Are you in the habit of working with bi-hazardous body fluids in your kitchen? If you are doing the run of the mill cleaning in your house then you can probably stay away from those sorts of heavy chemicals for cleaning.
Next determine the kinds of chemicals you have- Landry detergent, air fresheners, pet and flea powder, collars or spray, insecticides, dishwashing agents. Window cleaner, drain cleaners, Rug and carpet cleaner. These generic names all have associated harmful chemicals: Cationic or anionic solutions, Phenol, Ammonia, Hydrochloric acid, chlorine, naphthalene, P-Dichlorobenzene, Butopyronoxyl.
Wouldn’t we think twice if we were asked to pass the Napthalene Carpet Cleaner. You know the stuff that gets the carpet clean and may cause liver damage and forms cataracts. Maybe we should think twice more often. Don’t fooled by “green” products either. They too have hazardous chemicals in them.
Here is your homework- try to make a homemade cleaner with baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice. There are dozens of recipes using products that are not harmful to you, your children, your pets or the environment. In addition- choose one chemical and search its name in google and the term “SDS” which mean Safety Data Sheet. So an example would be “Windex SDS.” Once you read the Safety Data Sheet for the product you are using you may consider never using it again.
Life is full of hazards so why not remove and reduce those around us that we willingly bring in. Children don’t know the different between spray bottle of Windex or a Spray bottle of water.
If your child does ingest a dangerous chemical know the number to call…the nationwide poison control center phone number, 1-800-222-1222.
Don’t keep it if you don’t need it. Have a great day.
