Thanks, Discover, for sharing the significant need for research on preeclampsia.

"As early as 5,000 years ago, ancient scholars in China, Egypt, Greece, and India all wrote about eclampsia, according to a study in the Journal of Reproductive Immunology. And in 1916, one researcher called it the “disease of theories” because there were many possible causes.

“There is no single cause, but research has uncovered that there are multiple things at play,” Danielle Babcock Sapienza, the education and support manager for the Preeclampsia Foundation, told Discover.

Even today, technological advances have enabled better detection, but there still isn’t a cure, and much remains unknown."

May is Maternal Mental Health Month, and we're Connecting the Dots for Maternal Mental Health 🔵

1 in 5 parents will experience a perinatal mental health disorder (PMHD) during or after pregnancy. PMHDs
are the #1 complication of childbirth. And yet...most parents navigate it in silence.

That silence is what we’re here to break.

This May, Postpartum Support International and The Blue Dot Project are sharing the statistics, stories, support, and solidarity about perinatal mental health disorders so that every parent knows they are not alone, they are not to blame, and with help, they WILL be well.

Q: Skin-to-skin after delivery: How long should it last?

A: There’s no rush! Research shows that keeping newborns and parents skin-to-skin for at least an hour, and ideally up to two, has big benefits:

âś… Breastfeeding gets off to the best start
âś… Baby's temperature regulates
âś… The microbiome gets a healthy start
âś… Milk supply gets a strong foundation

Life with a newborn will be hectic soon enough … but this time should feel like it stands still. It's when parent and baby meet, bond, and feed for the very first time.

At Baby-Friendly facilities, immediate skin-to-skin is the standard of care, practiced regardless of method of birth, whenever medically possible. Trained staff stay close by to support parent and baby and offer gentle assistance with baby's first latch and feed.

This is so real! There is no guarantee of healing or relief simply because one has given birth.

This is so real! There is no guarantee of healing or relief simply because one has given birth.

We have been discussing preeclampsia myths. Our next myth is a very common myth.

MYTH: Delivery is the cure.

REALITY: Delivery starts the healing process from preeclampsia because it removes the placenta. However, during your pregnancy, the placenta exchanged blood between your blood stream and your baby's. You can get worse postpartum (or even experience it for the first time!), because the placenta has dumped chemical proteins into your system and your body has to mop them up, which cannot occur instantly. Women have had seizures as late as several weeks postpartum, which can be life-threatening. Watching for and reporting symptoms of severe headache, visual disturbances, and breathlessness after delivery is important for the safety of new moms. Moms are at risk for preeclampsia up to 6 weeks postpartum.
