Let's breakdown these terms...

Income of all sorts are classified based on how they are obtained.

Think of earned income as you had to work for it (salary, self employed income), while for unearned income not much physical effort has been made (capital gain, dividends).

Earned income are typically taxed higher than unearned income, hence why many people prefer to acquire income by not physically earning it. Instead allowing their money to work for them.
