For two years that was the move. Open every prompt with "You are a world-class strategist" or "act as an expert copywriter." It felt like the secret handshake.
On today's models, that line is quietly making your results worse.
Here's why. Older models guessed at what you wanted. The newer ones take you literally. So when you pile on an expert persona, the AI spends its energy performing the role instead of doing the job. A 2024 study even tested 162 expert personas across 2,410 questions. Adding the persona didn't help. The effect was basically random.
So what works now? Stop describing who the AI is. Start describing what a great result looks like.
Instead of "you are a world-class pricing expert," try "give me three pricing options, each one leading with its main trade-off, and cite a source for every number."
Be specific about the goal. The AI will figure out how to get there.
The skill was never the magic role. It was knowing exactly what you wanted. Period.
