Want better results from when using Generative AI tools like ChatGPT? Use this 3-step prompt formula.
Outline the task — Say exactly what you want, who it’s for, and why it matters.
Example: “Summarize last quarter’s sales and suggest marketing strategies for next quarter.”
Give helpful context — Attach any relevant docs and/or background information. If you don’t have docs, paste a 1–2 sentence summary (business type, key numbers, audience, goal).
Example: "Use the data from the attached Q2 Sales report" OR “Q2 revenue $120K; top product Pro Plan; audience = small agencies; goal = +15% MRR.”
Describe your ideal output — Specify role, audience, and format so the response matches your needs.
Example: “Write as a formal executive summary to be presented to C-Suite executives.”
Final Prompt:
“Summarize last quarter’s sales results and suggest marketing strategies for next quarter. Use the data from the attached Q2 sales report — or use this summary if the report isn’t available: ‘Q2 revenue $120K; best-selling product = Pro Plan; audience = small agencies; goal = increase MRR 15%.’ Write it as a formal executive summary to be presented to C-Suite executives.”
