April 25th is National Telephone Day!
In 1885, the first phone line in Alberta was installed, linking Edmonton to St. Albert. Major James Walker installed Calgary’s first phone system later that same year. By 1914, there were 37,000 phones in Alberta! Many post offices housed the local telephone exchange. On the short grass prairie, telephone signals were commonly carried along barbed wire fences.
