Millions of U.S. workers are exposed to heat in their workplaces. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable, every year, thousands become sick from occupational heat exposure, and some cases are fatal. Most outdoor fatalities, 50% to 70%, occur in the first few days of working in warm or hot environments because the body needs to build a tolerance to the heat gradually over time. The process of building tolerance is called heat acclimatization. Lack of acclimatization represents a major risk factor for fatal outcomes.

Occupational risk factors for heat illness include heavy physical activity, warm or hot environmental conditions, lack of acclimatization, and wearing clothing that holds in body heat in addition to personal risk factors based on each individual's condition.

Hazardous heat exposure can occur indoors or outdoors, and can occur during any season if the conditions are right, not only during heat waves. The following is a list of some industries where workers have suffered heat-related illnesses.

OUTDOORS
Agriculture, Construction (especially road, roofing, and other outdoor work), Landscaping, Mining and Logging, Mail and Package Delivery, Oil and Gas Well Operations.

INDOORS
Bakeries, Kitchens, Laundries (heat-generating appliances), Electrical Utilities (especially boiler rooms), Fire Service, Iron and Steel Mills and Foundries, Manufacturing with hot local heat sources such as furnaces, and Warehousing.

It is mandatory to train both employers and employees regarding the dangers and safety measures to prevent Heat Illness, which includes Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stress, Heat Stroke, and even death. This poster was created by OSHA and can be used as a reference guide, and as a supplement to the required training. Displaying OSHA safety posters is a sign of your commitment to safety.

New Protections Against Non-Compete Agreements in Virginia
(§ 40.1-28.7:8)

What to Know:

Beginning July 1, 2026, Employers are prohibited from requiring health-care workers in Virginia from entering into a non-compete agreement.

This prohibition is for any healthcare employee licensed, registered, or certified by the Board of Medicine, Nursing, Counseling, Optometry, Psychology, or Social Work.

Employers may not prevent a healthcare provider from informing a patient that they have changed employers or accepting a patient who affirmatively reaches out to the healthcare provider.

Beginning July 1, 2026, a non-compete agreement may not be enforced against any employee who is laid off without severance benefits.

Virginia has a longstanding prohibition against requiring employees who earn less than the state average weekly wage, currently $1,507.01 a week, to enter into a non-compete agreement.

What Employers Can Do:

Employers can review any non-compete agreements that apply to Virginia employees to ensure compliance.

Connecticut’s revised Discrimination Is Illegal poster adds several expressly identified protections, including alienage; status as a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking; erased criminal history; and retaliation for protected activity. It also updates and expands the wording concerning disabilities, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, pregnancy accommodations, and criminal-history protections. In addition, the revised poster consolidates the former employment, housing, public-accommodation, and credit lists into a simpler format and replaces the former regional-office information with CHRO’s centralized telephone number, current website, and QR code.

Attention Louisiana Employers: Louisiana enacted the Behind the Counter Protection Act on May 22, 2026, to provide additional safeguards for employees who regularly interact with customers.

Effective August 1, 2026, the law strengthens protections for covered retail, food-service, and hospitality workers and provides increased criminal penalties for individuals who threaten, assault, or commit other acts of violence against them.

This laminated 12" x 18" poster helps communicate that threats, abuse, and violence against employees are criminal acts under Louisiana law. Displaying the notice in a visible location can help deter misconduct and reinforce your business’s commitment to maintaining a safe workplace.

The notice is included with our Louisiana and Federal Workplace Poster, but it is also available separately for businesses that need additional copies or prefer to display the warning prominently in customer-facing areas.

As the Top OSHA Violation receiving over 7,000-8,000 related violations each year, Slips, Trips, and Falls are the leading cause of workplace injuries causing well over 200,000 non-fatal injuries that require days off from work. This poster is designed as a quick reference instructional guide to help prevent the dangers of improper body posture. To be used as a supplement to required safety training, this poster contains common safety mistakes that occur in the job, as well as proper lifting techniques, and DO's and DON'T's to prevent slips, trips, and falls. The wording used in the poster is concise and general in nature, but is nonetheless extremely helpful in reminding workers to avoid mistakes and possibly even injuries in your worksite.

Our poster at Compliance Posters of America is printed in full color and laminated for durability. This poster is available in either 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 inch formats.
