🪳 Ever seen a WHITE cockroach?

No, it’s not an albino roach—and it hasn’t suddenly changed species.

What you’re seeing is a cockroach that has recently molted. Roaches have to shed their old outer shell as they grow. Immediately after molting, the new outer covering is soft and pale, sometimes appearing almost completely white.

As that new outer covering hardens, it gradually develops the normal darker color we associate with cockroaches.

So if you see one like this, you’re catching a roach during a pretty short window in its life.

And yes… even though it’s white, it’s still a roach. 😂🪳

Found this while splitting some firewood 👀

It’s a good reminder that firewood can harbor termites and other wood-destroying insects. That doesn’t mean finding termites in your firewood means your house has termites — but it’s definitely something worth paying attention to.

A couple simple tips:
🔥 Keep firewood off the ground
🔥 Don’t stack it against your house
🔥 Only bring inside what you’re going to burn

Just another interesting find while getting the wood ready for the season!

Father and son putting in the work today. 💪

I’m proud to have these two guys on the Tom’s Termite & Pest Control team. There’s something pretty cool about seeing a father and son working side by side, learning from each other and getting the job done.

They don’t mind getting dirty, they don’t mind crawling in the tight spots, and they show up ready to work.

Good people. Hard workers. That’s the kind of crew I’m proud to have representing Tom’s.

🐛 Now THIS is a cool one!

I ran across this little guy today and had to stop and take a few pictures.

This is a Sycamore Tussock Moth caterpillar.

Look at the hair on this thing! 😂 The orange head, white tufts, and all those little bristles make it one of the more unusual caterpillars you’ll come across here in Indiana.

They’re associated with sycamore trees, where the caterpillars feed on the leaves. They’re usually not a big deal, and nature has plenty of predators and other factors that help keep their numbers in check.

One thing I always tell people when I’m out doing pest work:

Just because something looks creepy doesn’t mean it’s a pest.

Sometimes it’s just a cool piece of Indiana nature doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. 🌳

And yes… I’m glad I took the pictures instead of picking this fuzzy little dude up. 😂

I actually enjoy coming across stuff like this. You never know what you’re going to find when you’re out and about! 🌳🐍

I released him right after the photo shoot 😂😂😂. No reptiles were hurt. Just a couple photos. 😂

😂 Apparently, even the bugs around here know how to hide from the pest control guy.

Found this little guy today sitting on the rocks, and I had to stop and get a picture. He’s a Protean Shieldback katydid (Atlanticus testaceus).

I’ll give him credit—he picked a pretty good hiding spot. Unfortunately for him, hiding from someone who makes a living finding bugs probably wasn’t his best decision. 😂

No treatment needed on this one. He’s just out here doing his thing.

Pretty cool what you can find when you slow down and actually look around. 🦗🌿

Hope everyone is enjoying their day off. If ya get one.

Well, I wasn’t expecting to see this today… 😂🐍

I was checking out the creek when I spotted this little guy just holding his head above the water like he was waiting on his Uber. 😂

Turns out he’s a Northern Watersnake. He wasn’t interested in bothering me… just sitting there watching the world go by.

Apparently even snakes know it’s too hot to get completely out of the water. 😂

Nature is pretty cool when you slow down and actually look around. 🌿🐍💦

🪲 Now this is a pretty cool beetle!

I came across this Carolina Copris while I was out working and had to stop and get a couple pictures.

This is a dung beetle, and it’s actually the largest species of dung beetle in North America. They can get around an inch or a little more, and when you see one up close, you can definitely tell this thing is built for digging.

What I find really interesting is how they go about their business. Unlike the dung beetles you see rolling a ball across the ground, these guys dig down underneath the dung and bury it. They use it for food and to raise their young.

So basically, this big black beetle is out there doing some serious cleanup work and putting nutrients right back into the soil.

Not every beetle is a pest. Some of them are actually pretty important little pieces of the ecosystem.

Nature never gets old. 🪲🌳

Came across some really cool ambrosia beetle activity on this tree stump.

What you’re seeing here are the little frass “toothpicks” the beetles push out of their galleries as they bore into the wood. When you see a bunch of them like this, it can almost look like the tree is growing tiny worms.

Ambrosia beetles have a pretty incredible relationship with fungi. They carry specific fungi into the wood, cultivate it inside their galleries, and then feed on that fungus. So in a way, these tiny beetles are actually farming underground inside the tree.

The little tubes sticking out of the wood are one of those signs you can easily walk right past if you’re not paying attention.

I’ve worked around insects for years, and this is still one of the things I enjoy most about being outside — there’s always something interesting going on if you take the time to look.

Nature is pretty amazing. 🌳🪲
