As I follow my passion for building better cities and neighborhoods where all of our kids can thrive, tomorrow I start my next chapter- serving as Pittsburgh’s new Director of City Planning. I struggled all week with what to say about my shift from MonWin Consulting to public service, and I realized I can’t capture it in a simple post.

What I realized is there’s no way to capture what I’ve learned over the last 12 years, and the 12 years before that with . So instead, what I do know, is that I’m taking every conversation, relationship, every struggle, and all the words of wisdom, from every resident and client I have worked with over the years. I’m excited to build on that knowledge and to serve the City of Pittsburgh in the best way I possibly can.

Earlier this summer I had the opportunity to collaborate with as part of their Elevate East initiative to envision the future of the 1801 Garnett Rd. site. This will become the home of a new mixed-use development that encompasses the unique character and mix of cultures in East Tulsa. This visionary project will complement the ongoing work in the Global District and provide for much needed housing in the area while providing new green spaces and opportunities for community celebrations.

I’m super grateful to Cynthia & Josh and their team, the youth that gave us their ideas for the future, all the community members who participated, and local businesses who helped feed everyone through this process. This coming weekend we are going to honor Seth Hufford, my friend, colleague, co-facilitator, teacher, listener, and many other things. Thank you to those that have reached out and are in mourning with us and his family. For those of you that have asked, I’m sharing details of his memorial below.

There’s no two more different people than Seth and I, but somehow we complemented each other in ways that probably didn’t make sense to most people/clients. I’ll never be able to explain why our approach to the world worked for the clients we’ve served, but I will miss designing conversations with him to help other people dream. I will miss the tough conversations we forced each other and our clients to have. Above all I will honor him by always trying to listen to others with my full self, and trying to stay in the present moment. Bc that’s all we’re guaranteed.

As some of you know, I'm working on an effort which is hugely important to me because it affects so many families- to improve the Allegheny County Jail:

My role in this effort is to hear from stakeholders and the public about what to prioritize in Rethinking the Allegheny County Jail. One component of this is a public survey, and we are 2 days from the survey closing. Join us tomorrow night to review the final draft of the Larimer Community Plan & Design Guidelines that The Larimer Consensus Group has been spearheading. We will be sharing a proposed approach to infill development, and how design guidelines can be used as a tool to encourage buildings that respect the neighborhood.
