The yellowjacket hiding underground? It might be an Eastern Yellowjacket.
Eastern yellowjackets are one of the most common stinging insects Pittsburgh-area homeowners need to watch for in late summer. Unlike paper wasps, which commonly build exposed nests under eaves, Eastern yellowjackets often build their nests underground or in protected cavities.
That means you may not even see the nest until you've already gotten too close.
Their nests can be found in abandoned rodent burrows, wall voids, beneath sheds, around landscaping, and other protected areas. As the colony grows throughout the summer, workers become increasingly active while searching for food.
And here's something important to remember: yellowjackets aren't just looking for flowers. They're attracted to sugary drinks, ripe fruit, garbage, pet food, and other food sources around your property.
