The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, in partnership with the Institute for Disability Empowerment and Advocacy at Duquesne University (IDEAatDuquesne) invites people ages 14 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with their families and caregivers, to participate in our Sensory Nature Walk and Education Seminar Series at the Frick Environmental Center.

Each session includes:
• A guided walk along our ADA-accessible Sensory Nature Trail
• A relaxed opportunity to experience nature through the senses
• A brief educational seminar for parents and caregivers about post-secondary inclusion opportunities

Starting last week, June 17, 2026, airlines must provide required training for personnel and contractors who assist passengers with disabilities and handle wheelchairs or scooters. Training is to include the safe use of the aisle chair, effective communication with and taking instructions from passengers with disabilities, and transferring passengers to and from their wheelchairs, the aisle chair, and the aircraft seat.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, the training is not only about wheelchair users, although wheelchairs are a major focus, but also includes awareness of different types of disabilities.

DOT regulations regarding this training fall under the Air Carrier Access Act, which prohibits disability discrimination in air travel. These regulations are separate from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

In case you don’t know why someone who is disabled, advocates, or cares for someone who is disabled, is angry or afraid.

What can happen to one vulnerable demographic, can happen to all. We should ALL be concerned.

In 1999, the Supreme Court ruled disabled people have a “right to live in the world” and the right to refuse to be institutionalized.

Although this paved the way for millions to live and receive care at home, we’re still advocating for the far too many people who remain excluded and without the support they need.
