Kathryn Blocki's passion for excellence in teaching is demonstrated by the consistent success of her students. Whether it is transforming an autistic child's fear of touching the metal on the flu
te into the freedom to express himself, or helping a gifted child win a competition playing the Ibert Concerto; her zeal to help every student reach their fullest potential is unmistakable. Her clinics on teaching the flute have been enthusiastically received at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago 2009) Tennessee Music Ed. Assoc. 2005, Inspirational Flute Masterclass, Greenville, SC 2005-2010, National Flute Association 2000-2009, IUSB Flute Festivals 2004 and 2003, Florida Flute Festival 2001, Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair 2005 and 2003, and colleges and universities. At the 2007 National Flute Convention she taught the Junior Masterclass, presented a clinic on tone production as a Conn/Selmer artist, and led a workshop entitled Syrinx: Inspiration, Integrity, and Interpretation. Publications include the Blocki Flute Method Book I and Teacher's Manual (winner of the NFA Newly Published Music Award): Blocki Flute Method Book II with Teacher's Manual and Ensemble Book, & Syrinx: Rhythmic Teaching Edition (licensed through the Theodore Presser Co). In 2008, she published two new duet books for the beginning and intermediate student. She is also the creator of the Great Beginnings for the New Flutist DVD, and patent holder for the Pneumo Pro Wind Director (a flute training tool). Before writing the Blocki Flute Method, Kathy received grants to study Suzuki Flute, Kodally, Orff and Dalcroze. Previously, she was a member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, and a soloist with the American Wind Symphony and Elkhart Symphony. As a past faculty member of Goshen College, she taught flute, flute choir, and aural music skills. She graduated with high honors from IU Bloomington, Indiana School of Music and highest honors from ASU, and has had the privilege of studying with Eric Hoover, James Pellerite (past principle flutist with the Philadelphia Philharmonic), Samuel Baron, (past Julliard School of Music Prof.) and Bernard Goldberg (past principle flutist of Pittsburgh Symphony). Currently, she serves as a member of the National Flute Association's Pedagogy Committee. Rebecca Hovan teaches at Indiana University South Bend and Goshen College. She is a member of the National Flute Association and served the NFA as Chair of the Pedagogy Committee for five years. As a member of the Pedagogy Committee, she participated in the preparation of several of the Committee's publications, a graded list of flute repertoire (2004) and a companion publication listing etudes, daily studies, and method books (2005). Most recently, the Committee published these two publications in one volume entitled Selected Flute Repertoire and Studies: A Graded Guide. Rebecca is also co-author of the Blocki Flute Method Book II, an intermediate method for flute (2003, 2nd edition 2005), and Supplementary Duets for Blocki Flute Method Book II, (2006). As a performer, she appears regularly in recital and with various ensembles in the Northern Indiana area. She has performed on programs at several conventions of the National Flute Association. Her training includes a Master of Music from the University of North Texas where she was a Teaching Fellow in Flute and studied with Mary Karen Clardy.
