How do they trust each other enough to do that? Every single day, they sit down and name every mistake they made โ€” out loud, one by one. Not just flying. "I ran a stop sign." "I didn't make a positive impact when I had the chance."

The most elite team on earth runs on the exact thing your ego hates most: admitting you were wrong.

This week I sat down with Commander Frank Weisser โ€” two-time Blue Angel, combat F-18 pilot, and the real aviator behind the canyon runs in Top Gun: Maverick. Two things from the cockpit stuck with me.

First: nobody is fearless. A man who's flown 18 inches off another jet told me "fearless" is hyperbole โ€” the real line is between prepared and reckless. The kid with "no fear" isn't braver. He's untrained and about to get hurt. Fear is information.

Second: before every fight, pilots state their "limfac" โ€” their limiting factors โ€” out loud. Because you can't strengthen what you won't name. (That's the SWOT, at 400 mph. He even writes about "the gift of injury" in his book. Great minds.)

Swipe through this week's Two Minute Drill ๐Ÿ‘‡
โ†’ Fearless is a myth: prepared vs. reckless
โ†’ Your ego is lying to you
โ†’ Frank Weisser on the debrief and the limfac
โ†’ 2 habits: run the debrief + state your limfac

Now what? Read an idea, then ask it. Everything's in the bio โ€” the episode, the blog, the drill, and the free assessment.

Tony Holler built the most influential speed-training philosophy in America on the opposite sentence.

Three things from our conversation that apply to anyone who runs a team:

1. "A true hack of coaches and teachers is to make what they're selling more likeable." People are good at what they like and obsessed at what they love. Likeability isn't softness โ€” his program has no posted rules and the best culture I've encountered.
2. "Motivation does not come from the words of coaches. Motivation comes from seeing progress." Record, rank, publish. If your people can't see their own deltas, no speech will fix it.
3. The grind is job security. Go 2-and-7 and "nobody worked harder than those guys" protects you. Results-with-rest requires courage: "Practice half as long and be twice as good" โ€” and be ready to explain it.

Which of the three does your organization actually run on?

Not because he's a gym guy. Because Blue Angels fly without G-suits, and at seven G's the only thing keeping blood in your head is core and lower body strength. Lose that fight and you black out at 400 miles an hour, eighteen inches off another airplane.
The team brought in powerlifting coaches. A Russian powerlifter wrote their program. Frank's favorite lift is the deadlift.

He describes an air show as holding a plank for an hour while curling forty pounds with one arm the entire time.

Somewhere a parent is still asking whether lifting is safe for their kid. The Navy answered that question a long time ago for the people it can least afford to lose.

They wouldn't let him take off. He couldn't steer the plane on the ground.

Frank Weisser went to the Naval Academy to become a SEAL. He didn't get it. The Navy handed him aviation instead, and he arrived at flight school having spent four years skydiving and rock climbing while every other student had spent theirs flying.

He was the worst one there. Not modest-worst. Wouldn't-clear-him-to-taxi worst.

Twenty-one years later: three combat deployments, two Blue Angels tours, and a seat in the cockpit as one of the pilots who flew the canyon runs in Top Gun: Maverick.

If your kid is the worst one in the gym right now, that is information about today. It is not information about the ceiling.

Reading your team's scores, the rules are simple:
โ–ช๏ธ The lowest block is the work. Not your favorite block.
โ–ช๏ธ The limiting factor is rarely where anybody thought.
โ–ช๏ธ Five kids low on the same block? That's not a five-kid problem. That's a program problem โ€” and it's yours.

And always: evidence, not vibes.

It's not what you FEEL. What you THINK is a little better. What I love is what you KNOW. What do you know this week โ€” not next month. This week.

Coaches: you'll learn more in ten minutes than in a season of watching from the bleachers. Score the roster. The series is done. The work starts today.

A national-level weightlifter told me the most impactful thing she's done for performance. It wasn't a program.

"Everything changed for me when I prioritized my sleep... I haven't had a bad day."
Rebecca Rouse trains in a silent two-car garage with a 76-year-old coach โ€” no music, no caffeine, no hype โ€” and took third at the American Open Finals. Her edge is the last hour of her day: lights down 60 minutes out, zero screens, and a hard rule that sleep outranks almost everything.

The part leaders should sit with: "The human brain cannot identify that it's sleep-deprived. You push through, you think you're fine. You don't know." The gene that lets people thrive on six hours rounds to zero percent of the population. Statistically, nobody on your team has it โ€” including you.

We glorify the 5 a.m. grind and then wonder why decision quality falls apart by Thursday.

What's your actual shutdown routine โ€” not the one you post about?

Brian Harper turned everything into a contest. The classroom. Every rep in practice. Every sprint. The wall sits and dead hangs they'd throw in at the end of a lifting session at Weber State โ€” last man standing.

He'll tell you straight that he wasn't the strongest guy in that weight room and he wasn't the fastest in a 40.

Didn't matter. The second it became a competition, he was winning it.
That's the part most people miss about competitiveness. It isn't a physical trait. It's a decision you make about how you're going to treat the next five minutes.

The offer comes on a Tuesday night. The family has forty-eight hours to decide something theyโ€™ve never once talked about.

Thatโ€™s the real NIL problem at the high school level. Not the money. The clock.

Dr. John DeWitt pulled together fifteen people โ€” attorneys, athletic directors, recruiters, coaches, parents โ€” whoโ€™ve watched families get this wrong, and put what they learned in one place. I wrote Chapter 6.

My chapter is the thing Iโ€™ve watched decide outcomes for thirteen years: preparation lowers anxiety, because the decision already got made before the pressure showed up. Athletes who prepare donโ€™t have to lean on emotion in the moment. They already have standards.
Thatโ€™s not an NIL principle. Itโ€™s a life principle that happens to work on NIL.

If youโ€™ve got a kid who could be in this conversation in the next two years, get the book. Not because Iโ€™m in it. Because fifteen people whoโ€™ve seen it go sideways wrote down what they learned so your family doesnโ€™t have to find out live.

Comment BOOK and Iโ€™ll send you the link.

Win the Day. Stay Relentless.

Three rules for reading your team's scores โ€” and the truth about why it's on you either way.

1๏ธโƒฃ The lowest block is the work. Not your favorite block. Not the thing you're best at coaching. The lowest block.
2๏ธโƒฃ Expect surprises. The limiting factor is rarely where anybody thought. The "lazy" kid who's really under-recovered. The "choker" who's really under-informed.
3๏ธโƒฃ Look for team patterns. Five kids low on the same block isn't a five-kid problem.

That's a program problem โ€” and it's yours.
Here's the hard truth, right or wrong: parents pay with their votes. They keep a kid on your team โ€” or in your gym โ€” based on results. Even when the problem is outside your jurisdiction, you're still getting judged by it.

So let's just get it right anyway.
