While restocking the drink machine at one of my newer locations, I decided to remove the credit card reader that came with the machine and install a brand new one. The old reader may have been fine, but I wanted to know exactly what I was working with and make sure payments were processing properly from day one.

Sometimes replacing something is less about it being broken and more about eliminating one more unknown.

Vending tip. When deploying used equipment, test every payment method before leaving the location. A fully stocked machine cannot make money if customers cannot pay.

There’s something different about stocking a machine for the very first time. Today I’m getting this new location fully loaded, organized, and ready for customers. Now the fun part begins: watching the sales, learning what this location prefers, and making adjustments along the way.

Vending tip. Your first product lineup is just a starting point. Track the first few weeks closely because early sales data will help you build a product mix specifically for that location.

I’m officially putting my USI 3130 snack machine up for sale. This machine has been refurbished and upgraded with an InOne control board and LED lighting, accepts cash and coins, and is credit card reader capable. It was just pulled from an active location after I upgraded that site to a larger machine, so now it’s ready for another operator to put it back to work.

I got a call from the front desk letting me know the vending machine wasn't accepting payments. She wanted to catch me early so I wouldn't miss out on sales, which I definitely appreciated. Once I got on site, I started with the basics. Power was good, lights were on, and then I checked the bill validator. Sure enough, there was a dollar bill jammed inside. I cleared the jam, checked the coin mechanism, tested everything, and we were back in business.

Vending tip. Start simple when troubleshooting. Before assuming you have a major equipment failure, check for jams, power issues, and basic payment functions first. Sometimes a five minute fix is all you need.

Heading out to stock a machine at a new location for the first time, and I finally got to put the new Power Up Vending vest to work. Shoutout to whoever recommended the vest because you were right. It’s lightweight, professional, and the logo on the front and back makes it easy to identify me on site.

After that, it was over to a sister location for another restock. And one thing I’ll continue to recommend as you grow: if your budget allows you to hire professionals to move your vending machines, do it. Some jobs are worth outsourcing so you can focus your time and energy on operating and growing the business.

Vending tip. You don't have to do everything yourself to be a successful operator. Knowing what to outsource can be just as valuable as knowing how to do it yourself.

There’s more to servicing a vending machine than filling empty slots. During this restock, I also cleaned the condenser using a brush and mini vacuum to remove built up dust and keep the cooling system running efficiently. Once the maintenance was finished, I cleaned up, completed the restock, and made sure this community center machine was ready to go. Anybody can fill a vending machine. Taking care of your equipment is what keeps it in business.

Vending tip. Add basic preventive maintenance to your regular restock routine. Catching small issues early can help extend the life of your equipment and prevent unnecessary downtime.

Sometimes after repairing or restocking a machine, you end up with a few products that just aren't going back in. Damaged bottle? Mine. Snack bag that's mostly air? Definitely mine. 😂 No sense putting something back that I wouldn't want a customer buying, so I'll take one for the team.

Now it's on to the next stop to check whether another warehouse is finally ready for its machine. Hopefully I'll have another installation to show you next time.

Vending tip. If a product doesn't meet the standard you'd expect as a customer, don't sell it. Protecting the customer experience is worth more than the cost of one snack or drink.
