As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, I’ve been reflecting on the extraordinary historical significance of this milestone.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. It is a document that did far more than announce separation from Britain. It articulated an idea that would shape generations: that rights are not granted by government, but are inherent, and that liberty requires courage, responsibility, and stewardship.

Victor Davis Hanson recently reflected on America at 250 and the durability of our founding system, its checks and balances, ordered liberty, and Constitution built with an understanding of human nature. Whether one agrees with every perspective or not, his broader point is worth considering: the American experiment has endured not because it is perfect, but because it was designed to be tested, corrected, and renewed.

Two hundred and fifty years later, this anniversary is an opportunity not only to celebrate, but to remember. To remember the risk taken by those who signed. To remember the generations who preserved and expanded the promise of liberty. And to remember that citizenship is not passive, it asks something of each of us.

May this milestone remind us to be grateful for what was handed down, honest about what still requires work, and committed to preserving the principles that have allowed this nation to endure.

What a wonderful, joyful Thanksgiving spent with great friends who have truly become family. From the laughter to the singing around the table, the day was full of warmth, fun, and all the reasons this season feels so special.

So thankful for the people in our lives who show up, lift us up, and make life richer just by being in it. Cheers to friendships that feel like home.

This week, as the world honors the remarkable life of President Jimmy Carter, I've found myself reflecting on a once-in-a-lifetime moment that has grown more meaningful with time.

In 2015, I had the extraordinary fortune of meeting President Carter. He was in town for a book signing, and by sheer chance, we both found ourselves at the Heathman Restaurant for lunch. When I realized, he was planning to dine alone, I asked President Carter if would like to join me. To my surprise (and probably to his Secret Service detail team) he graciously accepted. What followed was an unforgettable meal, filled with conversation about his marriage to Rosalynn, the challenges he faced as President, his passion for writing, and his deeply held belief in serving others.

President Carter also spoke fondly of his upbringing and life as a farmer before going into politics. Having grown up in Georgia myself, with grandparents who were farmers, it felt like we were bridging generations through shared values - hard work, humility, and resilience. Those early experiences shaped us both in profound ways, and hearing him reflect on those times brought a sense of kinship I never imagined I'd feel with a U.S. President.

That day, I realized how lucky I was to be in the right place at the right time, sharing an authentic, personal conversation with our 39th President. It's is an experience I will always treasure.
