Maine Technology Institute Founded and funded in 1999 by the Maine State Legislature, MTI offers grants, loans, equity investments and services to grow the Maine Economy.

The Maine Technology Institute was established by the Maine State Legislature in 1999. MTI, working with partners across the state, “shall encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in the State's technology-intensive industrial sectors to enhance the competitive position of those sectors and increase th

e likelihood that one or more of the sectors will support clusters of industrial activity and to create new jobs for Maine people.” MTI is one element of the State's economic development strategy to contribute to the long-term development of a statewide research, development and product deployment infrastructure. We offer support, resources and funds exclusively to Maine entrepreneurs and business owners in an effort to bolster Maine's economy and create jobs. Every $1 of MTI funds received generates an additional $14 in non-MTI funding. MTI funded companies say that MTI funding has been critical to their commercial success. Since 2000, MTI has funded 1,295 technology projects in Maine, a financial commitment of $106 million that has leveraged over $173 million in additional funding for a total of $280 million.

What helps entrepreneurs take the first step?

Through the Expanding Maine's Innovation Ecosystem pilot, Maine Technology Institute partnered with seven organizations across the state to better understand how entrepreneurs, workers, students, and communities connect to Maine's innovation economy—and where support can make the biggest difference.

With more than $387,000 awarded, these pilots expanded access to business planning, workforce development, technology training, peer networks, community events, and regional partnerships. Together, they showed there is no single pathway into innovation—and that trusted local organizations are essential to helping people get started.

Explore the pilot's impact and what these efforts reveal about strengthening Maine's innovation ecosystem. Read more here: https://www.mainetechnology.org/updates/expanding-maines-innovation-ecosystem-building-new-pathways-for-entrepreneurs/
