What satisfies you?

Not that type of satisfaction silly, this is Facebook!

One thing that I have always gained personal satisfaction from is my job. I’ve always been mentally vested in the company’s success, likely because I see my own success parallel with my employers.

Even though I spent 35 years as an employee for other folks, I truly loved watching the revenue increase or seeing products sell well.

Maybe because I have always worked for privately held, family businesses. Or maybe it is an ingrained work ethic because all my parental figures were entrepreneurs.

Whatever the reason, I’m just wired to care.

How are your tools working for you?


Not that type of tool silly; this is Facebook!

One of my prior co-workers used to refer to software and apps as tools to complete job duties. He was vocal about integrations and processes when the new tools made his job more challenging instead of easier.

I have managed and witnessed so many software implementations in my 35-year accounting career. I have sat through so many software demos, asking every question the team could think of to ask.

What I have learned is that as the implementation begins and over the course of the project, things come to light, little surprises. Once the company’s real data is in the system and testing of processes begins, that is when the real test happens.

But at this point, a lot of labor and software contracts are in the past.

I really cannot stress this enough. Know what the project goals are. As you travel down the path, stop and assess if this is truly the right solution for the company. If you’re giving up more than you are gaining, you have a cost benefit failure. Let go of the sunk costs and walk away.

On my LinkedIn feed, I see all the canned posts about accounting tips and why outsourced accounting professionals are a value to SMBs.

I keep pondering how to present this information in a unique and engaging way to market my new consulting business.

Let’s be real for a minute… Who wants to read about debits, credits, assets, and liabilities?

Accounting is boring for most folks; a puzzle they have no interest in solving; confusing for some and a different language for others.
