SMRT Architects & Engineers SMRT is a full-service architecture, engineering and design firm with offices in ME, MA & NY

SMRT was founded in Portland, Maine by pioneering architect John Calvin Stevens in 1884. Since then, we have grown to a full-service architecture, engineering and design firm across four offices in Portland and Bangor, Maine, Andover, Massachusetts and Schenectady, New York. At last week's community forum, Meghan Shirley presented the work of SMRT’s Creativity & Innovation Committee, which supported the Toss the Tanks campaign in South Portland, Maine and helped residents imagine the possibilities for the site. Each year, the committee selects one project to donate their time and expertise toward, and this year, SMRT is proud to support the Toss the Tanks initiative—aiming for a cleaner, greener future for the city.

The campaign centers on reimagining the 100-acre Hill Street oil tank farm, which currently presents environmental and safety concerns in the surrounding urban area. Through extensive community input, affordable housing emerged as a top priority. In response, SMRT proposed a visionary yet adaptable master plan that weaves in compact, walkable neighborhoods, vibrant public spaces, and robust multimodal connections. The design emphasizes sustainability, resilience, and equitable access—grounded in smart growth principles and aligned with the City’s comprehensive plan and community feedback.

We’re honored to contribute to this transformative initiative and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community. Together, we can build a more sustainable and vibrant future for the City of South Portland.

🦞 Another year, another Lobster Dip for a great cause! 🦞

This year marks the 38th annual Special Olympics Lobster Dip! Though the main event was canceled due to unsafe conditions at Old Orchard Beach, SMRT's D.A.M We're Cold team was undeterred and took the plunge into the 41° water at a safer location. We proudly raised over $11,900 for Special Olympics Maine!

This event holds a meaningful place in our hearts, especially as we honor the memory of the beloved David A. Mains, an architect, firefighter, husband, father, and friend. His son, A.J., shines as a Special Olympics athlete, inspiring us to carry on David's legacy. Since our first dip in 2019, our team has more than doubled in size! Thank you to all our amazing SMRTers who braved the cold for such a worthy cause!

Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to make a difference together! 💪💙

🎉 140 Years of Design Excellence 🎉

Today, we’re proud to celebrate our 140th anniversary and the launch of our new legacy web page! We chose October 8 for this celebration as it marks the birthday of our founder, John Calvin Stevens, and the 2009 proclamation of “John Calvin Stevens Day” by the City of Portland.

A celebrated historical figure in Maine, John Calvin Stevens founded the firm in 1884. His company of one has evolved into the multi-disciplined architecture and engineering firm we are today, with a portfolio that reaches across the country and beyond. From the shingle-style coastal cottages of our past to today’s high-performance, sustainable buildings, we honor the incredible journey and the team that made it possible.

Thank you to our clients and employees, past and present. Your trust and commitment have helped shape over a century of success.
