At last week's community forum, Meghan Shirley presented the work of SMRT’s Creativity & Innovation Committee, which supported the Toss the Tanks campaign in South Portland, Maine and helped residents imagine the possibilities for the site. Each year, the committee selects one project to donate their time and expertise toward, and this year, SMRT is proud to support the Toss the Tanks initiative—aiming for a cleaner, greener future for the city.
The campaign centers on reimagining the 100-acre Hill Street oil tank farm, which currently presents environmental and safety concerns in the surrounding urban area. Through extensive community input, affordable housing emerged as a top priority. In response, SMRT proposed a visionary yet adaptable master plan that weaves in compact, walkable neighborhoods, vibrant public spaces, and robust multimodal connections. The design emphasizes sustainability, resilience, and equitable access—grounded in smart growth principles and aligned with the City’s comprehensive plan and community feedback.
We’re honored to contribute to this transformative initiative and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our community. Together, we can build a more sustainable and vibrant future for the City of South Portland.
