Settling Seniors Guiding families step by step with compassion to find the right senior living community for their loved ones. 💜

Most people touring senior living communities notice the lobby chandelier.
I notice the chair arms.

When you're helping someone with limited mobility stand up from a seated position, the height and firmness of the furniture matters a lot. It's that kind of detail you won't find in a brochure.

Can you tell if the common spaces are designed with actual residents in mind...not just for an appealing aesthetic?

Memory care and assisted living are not the same thing.

Here we break down what each environment offers, signs commonly associated with different levels of care, and what points to consider before making a decision.

Swipe through, save it, and share it with anyone navigating a dementia diagnosis right now: this is the kind of information that changes outcomes. 💜

Not sure which is right for your loved one? That's what I'm here for. Link in bio.

This one goes out to all the caregivers; whether by profession or by circumstance. You're an important part of our community! I hope you'll take a moment for yourself today, even if it feels impossible or irresponsible to do.

He did everything right.

He toured the communities himself. Asked questions. Made the best decision with the information he had. Not long after, he learned that things aren't always what they appear on a tour; that what looks right from the outset doesn't always hold up over time.

That's when I got the call.

What I do isn't magic. It's knowing what the marketing doesn't show you, and knowing what to look for. If you're starting this search, or you've already started looking for homes in and around Montgomery County, Maryland: you're welcome to a free discovery consultation. Link in bio. 💜

This work isn't just a job for me.

When my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I watched my family navigate a system they didn't understand, without anyone to guide them. That experience is why I spent the last 20+ years learning this industry from the inside: home health, hospice, independent living, assisted living, and memory care.

Not because I planned a career. Because I knew what it felt like to need someone who knew the answers. Now I'm that person for families who are exactly where mine was.

This is why I advocate for seniors, and it's why I take every family's situation personally. 💜

Paying for Senior Living: A Plain‑English Guide - I wrote this to make the financial side feel understandable, not overwhelming. 📖🤝💙

This post walks through the big pieces families often mix up: Medicare (what it does-and doesn’t-cover), Medicaid (how it can pay for long‑term care but requires strict asset limits and a five‑year look‑back), long‑term care insurance, VA Aid & Attendance, and practical ways home equity or life insurance can help. This is an overview-not financial advice-but it will help you see the choices more clearly.

The single best move is to map your full financial picture five or more years before need. If you want help getting organized, my discovery consultation includes an organizing conversation about finances and I can connect you with trusted advisors (I work with families in Montgomery County and the DMV). I’m Heidi - certified dementia practitioner and senior lifestyle consultant - and I’ll walk alongside your family.

Read the full guide and tell me: what’s your biggest question about paying for care?

The single best thing most families can do is map their full financial picture five or more years before need. Options narrow as the timeline shortens. A good financial advisor — ideally one who works with senior families regularly — can build the plan in a few sessions.

Do you know what to ask on a senior living community tour?

Most families walk out of tours with brochures and a gut feeling. What they rarely have is the information that actually predicts whether this place will be right for their loved one in two years...not just right now.

These are the five questions I bring to every tour (they're things that don't appear on any marketing material). While this list can help you get started, I highly recommend bringing a qualified expert. As your local Montgomery County senior housing specialist, I tour each community before recommending it. I also schedule every tour for seniors and their families, where I join them every step of the way.

Some days how old I am feels exactly how I'm old. Other days feel like I shaved off decades overnight.

Show you care: prepare.

Most families aren't avoiding the senior living conversation because they don't care. Sometimes caring is exactly what makes it hard to say certain things out loud.

Here's what I've watched happen more times than I can count: a family calls me in October. Their mom fell in August. She's been in rehab since September. The facility needs a discharge plan by end of month — and they have three weeks to find her somewhere to live. Three weeks for a decision that, under good circumstances, takes six to eight weeks minimum.

This family is not choosing. They're scrambling.

A Plan of Action changes that equation entirely. It's giving your family the gift of choice before the pressure arrives. If you'd like to know what that looks like for your family, I'd love to walk you through it. Book a free discovery call — link in bio. 💜
