Public urged to "Stand Up and Do Right" on this Independence Day

(Port Orchard, WA) – Consumer fireworks go on sale June 28 in Kitsap County. As a reminder discharging fireworks in unincorporated Kitsap County is only allowed July 4th between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. As in past years the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Kitsap County Fire Chief’s Association are recognizing the danger fireworks present and are urging citizens to leave fireworks to the professionals. Every year there are approximately 18,500 fireworks-related injuries with approximately 230 people heading to the emergency room everyday in the month surrounding the Independence Day holiday.

In an effort to promote celebrating safely by enjoying a public firework display show, the Kitsap County Fire Chief’s Association will again donate $100 to each of the area’s public fireworks displays. “We want folks to stand up and celebrate our nation’s independence, but we want them to do it right,” says Kitsap County Fire Marshal, David Lynam. “Every year fireworks cause injuries, property loss and cause animals, especially dogs and horses, great distress. This year let’s be safe, let’s be good neighbors and let’s have a good 4th,” Lynam says. Click here for a list of free public display shows.

Those who decide to use consumer fireworks are reminded to purchase only legal fireworks from licensed fireworks stands. Consumer fireworks go on sale at locations in unincorporated Kitsap County, Bremerton, Port Orchard, and Poulsbo at noon on Tuesday, June 28 until 10:00 p.m. on July 4. The sale of fireworks on Bainbridge Island is limited to July 1 – July 4. Click here for a list of legal fireworks stands in unincorporated Kitsap County. Other legal fireworks stands are available within specified city limits. Contact your city for locations.

Authorized firework discharge periods are the same as last year with discharge of consumer fireworks limited to 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 4, in unincorporated Kitsap County, the City of Bainbridge Island, the City of Bremerton, and the City of Port Orchard. Fireworks may not be discharged at any other time of the year.

Certain fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, missiles and skyrockets are strictly prohibited off of tribal lands. Having or setting-off these fireworks off tribal land is illegal and subject to civil and criminal penalties of up to $1,000. The possession or discharge of M-80s and larger, cherry bombs, tennis ball bombs, and legal fireworks that have been altered is a felony subject to a fine and/or imprisonment. Information for those in Washington state regarding when you can legally purchase and discharge fireworks as of 4/2015.

Remember that after last year's lack of rain, many areas passed laws for them to cancel/prohibit discharging of fireworks if the conditions concerned local authorities. Always check your local regulations before discharging fireworks of any type

A little food for thought about the use of fireworks -- $627,080 in property loss damage, probably higher when all expenses are added in. Please be responsible and a good neighbor when discharging fireworks.

What is the cost of damage caused by consumer fireworks?
There were 240 reported fires last year in Washington caused by consumer fireworks. These fires caused $627,080 in property losses reported by Fire Marshal’s offices. This figure is probably less than the actual damage caused by consumer fireworks. This year stand up and do right! Stand up and celebrate our nation’s independence, but do it right. Make this fourth safer!
