How often should you tidy areas of your house?
By Tidy, I mean to make some adjustments. Spend 10-30 minutes rearranging things, putting things back, and purging of obviously old or empty things and trash.

Ideally---
Purse: Do a quick clean out every 1-2 weeks. Get rid of old receipts, round up loose change, put the hair ties back where you can find them. Rearrange things into the "correct pockets". Put those store credit and gift cards front and center in your wallet where you can remember to use them!

Fridge: Same, every 1-2 weeks pull out old stuff like leftovers that didn't get eaten or old condiments with a short shelf life like dairy.
NOTE: This is another good reason not to have a ton of Tupperware. When you run out of Tupperware to use you will know it's time to purge the fridge a bit!

The Pantry--Once every 3 months with a bigger cleanout 1x a year. Take food you won't eat (but isn't expired) to a food bank. Put back things where they go (assuming there was once some organization in there.)

Your Bathroom vanity- once every 3 months. Purge those products that didn't work out, the makeup that never gets used, the old-as-hell chapstick you found in an old coat pocket.

Your car--A quick purge of trash every 2-3 weeks (to keep your sanity---probably more often if you have young children!)

The most common household items my clients seem to have in overabundance:

-Tupperware
If you keep them with their lids on, you can see what gets used and doesn't as well as what has a matching lid

-Mugs-
Just keep the ones you like, plus a few for company. Good guides are 4-6 mugs per coffee/tea/cocoa-drinking person in your house.

-Lightbulbs
No need to buy a lifetime supply!

- Sheets
Stick to 1-2 sets per bed

This is great! I may recognize some these signs in me.

People often ask me if I feel overwhelmed when I see a cluttered space. The answer is yes I do. BUT the solution is easy. I ignore that feeling and just start emptying the space. Keep the space small--empty one drawer, or one cabinet, or maybe 2-3 of them (but not a whole closet or an entire room).

Then I am starting with a blank slate and can one by one go through the items. What is trash, old, gross, what is loved, great, etc.

But Emptying the space first is vital for other reasons.

It helps me see clearly what is in the space--If I am just moving things around I can't see everything such as an expiration dates or possible damage to the item.

It allows me to somewhat emotinally unattach to the item a bit.

It helps me see if I have too many duplicates.

It inspires me to maybe consider a different location or home for the items that make more sense.

I can more easily measure the space if I determine I need an organizing product.

The blank slate I created by emptying the space first helps me create a new, nicer, more organized way to store everything when I am putting things away.

So when you see a cluttered space and want to run away from being overwhelmed, just find one small spot to work on and empty it first!

By keeping the space small you are far more likely to finish the job rather than make the problem worse and stop out of frustration!
