Around here, opening-week preparations are going exactly according to plan.

And by "according to plan," we mean Mike is currently on his knees praying to the Shop-Vac gods.

They did not answer. 😂

Apparently getting ready for deer season AND getting a taxidermy shop up and running involves a surprising amount of negotiating with equipment that has chosen violence.

🦌 6 DAYS!

While we're counting down to deer season, a whole bunch of y'all have already been out kicking off hunting season with dove opener this weekend!

Dove hunting isn't really our thing here at G-DET, but we'll take any excuse to see hunters back in the woods and fields doing what they love. 😂

And just because we don't hunt them or work on them doesn't mean we don't want to see them!

While some of y'all have probably had your stands ready, cameras checked and deer patterned since July… we're apparently choosing the 8-days-until-opening-day approach. 😂

🦌 9 DAYS UNTIL OPENING DAY!

Since we're counting down, I figured I'd share one of my own.

This guy is still the biggest buck I've ever harvested. He wasn't my first deer or even my first buck taken completely on my own, but he was my first real trophy, and I did the whole thing myself.

Even better, I got him out of “my spot.” And if you hunt with other people, you probably know exactly what that means. 😂 It's MY spot. Nobody else is allowed to hunt there. We all have one, right?

Years later, I can look at him on the wall and immediately remember that hunt. That's one of the things I love about taxidermy. A mount isn't just something hanging on the wall. It's a memory, a hunt, and a story you get to keep.

🦌 **10 DAYS UNTIL WHITETAIL SEASON!** 🦌

September 12th is almost here, and we’re ready to see what everybody brings out of the woods this year!

George’s Dead End Taxidermy is **OPEN and accepting deer for the 2026 season**, and we still have **a few spots remaining at our introductory discounted rate.**

We may be the new shop in town, but we’re putting a whole lot of time, care, and attention into building this business and doing right by every animal that comes through our door.

🤔 Any guesses what this funny-looking thing is for?

Another little piece of George's Dead End Taxidermy arrived in the mail!

This is a taxidermy fleshing/turning tool, and while it may not look like much, it has an important job. It's used during the skin-preparation process to help turn and work those small, delicate areas around the eyes, lips, nose and other tight spaces.

Those little details matter when you're trying to create a natural-looking finished mount.

Not the flashiest new piece of equipment we've gotten... but we're pretty excited about it anyway. 😂

Piece by piece, the shop keeps growing.

🦌 Alright NC hunters... we want to see them!

Who took advantage of North Carolina's first early velvet season and managed to put a velvet buck on the ground?

Two days. A brand-new opportunity. And hopefully a few really good stories came out of it.

🦌 Ever wonder what your deer looks like before it looks like... well, your deer?

This is where part of the transformation begins.

These foam forms are the foundation underneath a whitetail shoulder mount. They come in different sizes, poses and turns, and choosing the right one is part of recreating the look and character of each individual deer.

By the time we're finished, you won't be seeing this guy anymore. 😂

We're excited to start sharing more of the process as George's Dead End Taxidermy gets rolling. We'll show you some of the behind-the-scenes work, explain a little about what goes into a mount, and hopefully turn a few of these blank faces into trophies we're proud to send home.

We're still building George's piece by piece too, adding tools, equipment and supplies as we go. Someday it'll be pretty cool to look back at this and remember exactly where it all started.

But for now, back to the deer. 😂
