Here’s a couple core samples from lawns this past week.

Deep watering encourages deep roots:
Shallow watering, like 10 to 15 minutes, only moistens the surface of the soil. This can lead to shallow root systems, making the lawn more susceptible to drought and disease.

A crucial factor in achieving a beautiful, sustainable lawn involves a multifaceted approach. In addition to selecting the appropriate seed, proper watering, and mowing at 4 inches with sharp blades during the summer, enhancing soil structure is vital. Various options are available to support lawn health. By incorporating soil amendments and implementing a suitable fertilizer program, noticeable improvements in lawn vitality will become apparent over time. A thriving lawn is not an instantaneous achievement, but rather a result of ongoing efforts to build and enhance soil structure. For lawns that have struggled with issues year after year, consider aerating and overseeding with suitable seed at the end of the season, followed by additional overseeding the subsequent year to promote thickness. Realistically, transforming a lawn with deficiencies in cation exchange capacity (CEC), thinning, disease, and w**d issues into a healthy, thriving landscape can require 2-3 years with a well-designed program. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is a critical measure of a soil's ability to retain and exchange positively charged ions. This metric serves as a key indicator of soil fertility and overall health. Soils with CEC values below 12 are generally considered poor in terms of retaining cation nutrients. Soils with CEC values of less than 5 are deemed extremely poor, as they struggle to support turfgrass and other plant life. Furthermore, these soils face challenges in retaining water, leading to drought stress in plants. Conversely, soils with CEC values exceeding 25 are considered excellent in retaining nutrients and typically do not require liming applications. Humic and fulvic acids, derived from highly biodegraded organic matter, excel at chelating micronutrients in the soil. These organic substances boast exceptionally high CEC values and can be leveraged to enhance the water and nutrient retention capacity of soils with low CEC values.
