📣 𝗔 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘥?

It should represent more than technical knowledge or the ability to explain a process. It should also reflect professional judgment, ethical awareness, and the ability to make responsible decisions when real-life situations are not perfectly clear-cut.

A few months ago, our Board Certification Committee had an important conversation:
- Are we asking candidates enough about ethics during the certification interview?

𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. I’m pleased to share that our board-certification interviews now include additional ethics-focused questions. These conversations help us explore how candidates think about:

• Professional scope and boundaries
• Client safety and unexpected responses
• When to refer or collaborate
• Individualizing the work responsibly
• Continuing education and professional growth
• Keeping the client’s needs at the center of the work

𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲. 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

As Chair of the Board Certification Committee, I’m proud of this thoughtful addition to our process—and grateful to my fellow committee members for contributing their experience and perspectives.

Board certification should recognize what a professional knows—but also how that person thinks, responds, and carries the responsibility entrusted to them.

That is a standard worth continuing to strengthen.
