Ways to Practice a Digital Detox and Limit Screen Time

Set daily limits for social media and entertainment apps.
Turn off notifications that are not essential.
Create phone-free times, such as during meals, meetings, and family activities.
Avoid screens for 30–60 minutes before bedtime.
Keep your phone away from your bed or charge it in another room.
Take short screen breaks throughout the workday.
Use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Remove distracting apps from your home screen.
Unfollow or mute accounts that increase stress.
Choose one screen-free activity each day, such as walking, reading, journaling, cooking, or listening to music.
Spend time outdoors without checking your phone.
Schedule a weekly screen-free hour, evening, or afternoon.
Use “Do Not Disturb” or “Focus” mode when working or resting.
Check email and social media at planned times instead of continuously.
Track your screen time and set one realistic goal to reduce it.

💚 Self-Care Challenge: Put your phone away for 30 minutes today and use that time to do something that helps you feel calm and refreshed.

Preparation is everything when policies are changing and our communities will be impacted.

I had the opportunity to participate in the H.R. 1 Federal Work Requirements Information & Planning Session, hosted by HHR, VDSS, and DMAS, and I walked away with information that we can actually put into practice. Hint: DSS AI “Toni”.

What stood out to me was the focus on real case scenarios, practical tools, and the infrastructure needed to navigate implementation. These are exactly the kinds of conversations we need as we prepare to help individuals and families understand what these changes mean for them.

And the people made the day even more special! 💙 I was thrilled to see Dr. Steve Ford, DMAS Director, the legendary Ms Kelly Evans Outreach Program Coordinator—my mentor ❤️, along with so many wonderful and familiar (and new) faces from La Casa de la Salud and Serve Virginia.

There is a lot ahead of us. At VACHWA our focus is make sure CHWs and Promotores are informed, prepared, and positioned to help communities navigate what comes next.

We’re taking what we learn back to the community—that’s where it belongs. 💪🏽
